I know gifs aren't allowed, but this image is amazing.

Gifs are fine, just not as your signature, see the funny gifs thread for confirmation that they are acceptable in the right places. However hotlinking images isn't ok I'm afraid. If you don't have webspace of your own then feel free to let me know and I could host some for a while.

Thank you for highlighting though, they're quite stunning pictures.

I've always had a slight fascination with the planets. Even from a young age the variety of colours, size and their own quirks (e.g. Jupiter produces more heat than it recieves from the sun) have all been really interesting.

I can't find a link right now but apparently Saturn has a much larger ring around it which is slightly offset compared to rest.

What gets me is the scale - the rings are something like 80,000km in thickness. The earth is ~40,000 km circumference.
