I have a Gigabyte X58 UD5 motherboard and I a looking ot get a PCI-E sound card. At the moment I have got my eye on the Asus Xonar DX. As this has a small connector can it only go in the small pci-e slots near the cpu socket or can I just put it in one of the full length pci-e sockets?

It will work in any of the PCI-E slots that it will physically connect into.

ie an x1 will work in an x1, x4, x8 or x16 slot, whereas an x8 will not work in an x1.

That is good. As I can put it the one closest to the bottom of the case and use the power cable that I am using for the hard drives in the bottom chamber in my case (antec p183).
