HI GUYs

i currrently run windows vista 32bit i i have 4 gig of ram on its way and have beeen told that i would need a 64 bit opperating system to get the most out of the extra ram.

my question is this is it possible to purchase the windows 7 update pack and upgrade my windows vista 32 to windows 7 64 or would i have to stick with the 32 bit?

any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Wrong. He's eligible for an upgrade edition, he just wouldn't be able to do an in-place upgrade.

From the myriad of threads when W7 was released, it seems that you couldn't use the upgrade edition from a 32bit Vista to a 64bit W7?

You can't do an in-place upgrade, i.e. have Windows Setup upgrade an existing Windows installation, but you can do a clean install.

ok i see thanks for the info guys so rather than the upgrade disks i would need to buy the full version 64bit windows 7 disk rather than the upgrade set or is it possible to buy the upgrade set and reinstall the full version 64 from that.

its cheaper thats why i ask :)

again thanks all for taking time to post

People confuse licensing terms and installation method. You're eligible for an upgrade license and don't need to buy a full version of Windows 7. However when it comes to installing Windows 7 you'll have to do a clean install, which you'll be able to do with your upgrade disk.

Evilreg,

Yes it is possible to use Windows Vista 32 and the upgrade edition of Windows 7 to migrate over. Please note however that you will need to perform a "custom" install and not an upgrade as you cannot upgrade from 32-bit architecture to 64-bit.

Should you require additional assistance, Microsoft does have an official Windows 7 Support Forum located here http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/category/w7itpro/ . It is supported by product specialists as well as engineers and support teams.
