hi guys I have Acronis 10 but this is my first time using it my next door nabs HP laptop and a 150GB HDD Verbatim USB (external)

On his laptop he has default partitions

OS
Data
HP - Recovery

I had to do a fresh recovery via the HP thing and un installed all the bloat that comes with it and added software and whatnot.

I did a clone of the OS partition to the external but when I connect it it comes up with the OS folder and HP recovery partitions (via windows) when i make it so its boot-able it says MBR Error!

all i want to do is clone the laptop as it is now (fresh) so i can just put the external in and copy it back (if & when he buggers it up again)

IF you want to fix mbr problems (if using xp boot with xp disc , select recovery console , then use command
fixmbr
this will re-write the mbr with the default windows one)

When you say attach external drive and restore data , I take it you mean that
1. You created an acronis image of the OS partition and stored it on the ext drive.
2. And that when you want to restore it you will boot using the acronis boot disk
then attach the ext drive and point acronis to where the image you made was , then select the OS partition as the destination for the image.

Thanks for the reply Derkaderka is there any way i can just boot direct from the ext drive and not make a disk? I did notice that the ext drive was FAT32 so I have formatted it again I shall re do the clone of the laptop HDD.

I dont think you will be able to get it to boot from the ext drive

I think you are totally missing how to use this software

1. Install acronis workstation onto PC (reboot)
2. Run acronis , go tools -> Create bootable rescue media (needs blank cd)
3. Select which modules you wan to put on disc (I select all)
4. Burn disc , label disc.
5. Attach ext drive to PC
5. Go to tasks -> create task ,
select Backup -> Next
select My Computer -> Next
Just tick the OS partition ONLY -> Next -> Next
browse to the external drive and give the image file a name -> Next
Select Create incremental backup -> Next -> Next
Just use default options -> Next
Text box , enter some info about the PC you are imaging -> Next
for schedule just leave manually later -> Next
Click Finish , and then give this job a name eg backup_noobs_pc

you are done , any time you need to image his system you can just
run the created job.

works kinda like:
HD -> Image file , when u are backing up
boot with acronis Disk -> load image file -> put image back onto org hard drive , when you are restoring

Hope this helps
