Depends on the game

Some require reg keys or files stored in your my documents to load properly
Also some games install copy protections software

Give it a go and see what happens

Some games do, some don't

You can install steam on an external drive and it will work anywhere (just need to double click the steam.exe and it'll install steam again) -some savegame files for games will be stored in my documents etc mind.

If I install a game to an external hard drive, Then take the hard drive to a friends house, Would it still work?

I tried this myself on my dad pc. he uses same windows. all i did was copy my documents on to usb. then place my spare hardrive on his, backed up his doc. then replaced his docs with mine. made short cut of the game, and worked fine. but u will have to use documents file. maybe some games wont work. not sure..
