Hey all,

Me and some mates have been considering a holiday trip to Vegas for one week and then to LA for another week next year (when we are all 21 - so we can drink and gamble etc)

However, I've just watched a Louis Theroux documentry where he went to Vegas and it made me think... Is there anything more to Vegas than gambling?

I'm not a big gambler although I will set aside an amount of money that I am prepared to lose during the week. But I don't really want to spend the whole week gambling!

So are there any of you guys that have been to Vegas? What other stuff could we do whilst we are out there?

Thanks for any advice :D

I think Vegas.com is quite good for giving ideas on what do to.

I'm going in April, 4 days in Vegas and the rest of the time in LA. Think we're going to the Natural History Museum, Lake Mead, Hoover Dam, Seeing the Cirque Du Soliel show at the Treasure Island casino and maybe a couple of other things like the shooting range.

I don't think you have to be over 21 to enjoy yourself. I was in LA for a month over xmas and it didn't hinder me at all. :)

that documentary was rubbish, based around an off strip hotel which makes its money from conference folks and local gamblers, it really didn't show the real Vegas at all

I went to Vegas last year by myself, and didn't gamble at all - I had the best time of my life. There is so much more to Vegas than just gambling.

LA's a dump. There's no need to spend more than a day or two there. Horrid place.

Vegas can be good fun - do a search here though as there have been lots of threads about it, you might get some ideas from them.

Downtown LA is an absolute dump i liked West Hollywood , Santa Monica and Venice beach.

If i was to do a week in LA i would do.

1-days doing - Tours of famous peoples homes ( i wasn't into it before i went but can be quite interesting if you get the right guide ) Hollywood boulevard , Rodeo Drive. Then for the night go to The sunset strip.

2 - After getting hammered the previous night have a relaxing day at Venice beech. If staying in west hollywood its $1.20 and 30min bus. Look at all the stalls. Buy some medical marijuana ( which is legal) after you have done your tan for a while maybe rent a bike or skates and go to santa monica which is a mile or 2 along the beach. Visit the peer which is worth about 30mins of your time. Do some shopping and get some food at the Santa monica Promenade.

3 - Rent a car or pay about $30 for bus to Universal studies .. spend the day there.
4 - Six Flags theme-park some huge and awesome rides .. i wouldn't recommend going on the weekend though
5,6,7 - chill out at the beech some more? Try malibu? Fly to SanFran for $49 with virgin for 3 days?

Thats all i can think of really.

Some nice suggestions there trent. I was thinking about a fortnight fly drive to California maybe hiring a Mustang and doing some sight seeing, I'll probably try most of your suggestions but drive to SanFran for a few days.

Im not sure I would say LA s a dump, but I dont see what all the fuss about. We spent a few days there and thought is was a rather average place and wont be going there again. That was off the back of spending time in Vegas, then Kauai (Hawaii) which was absolutely fantastic.

If your Hiring a car The Mustang was $100/day but could maybe be found cheaper. I would recommend going to Yosemite National Park http://www.nps.gov/yose/index.htm Beautiful place but you would need to make a little detour if you was driving from LA to SF.

Maybe I'm just being harsh, but I just didn't like it. The fact that you wouldn't go there again either speaks volumes to me though ;)

i didnt want to do anything else except drink, gamble, and girls

I felt like a fat kid in a chocolate factory, the only thing that would be better is if i could spend around $5000 per day

I dont agree, a lot of "LA" is rubbish yes, but when you know where to go, its extremely nice

Just to add extra info..

Hollywood and Santa monica are two different cities, there are about 150 cities streching from there down to orange county.

ohh and venice beach is pure hippie land, so if you hate hippies like me and eric cartman, then avoid.

Personally Vegas is not my cup of tea but I go quite a bit with work. That said, group of lads will have a great time and no need to gamble too much. See if there are any concerts you are interested in, a lot of big acts come through the MGM. Do the outdoors stuff, bone a few pros, there is something for everyone.
