windows 7 upgrade question

so ive just got a ssd and want to put a fresh install of win7 on there
i only have a win7 upgrade disk tho, does that mean i will have to install vista first then upgrade or is there a way around this ?

At xmas I formatted a mates HD and installed upgrade no problems.

Just try it. There are good blogs/post on windows supper site about using upgrade.

not sure he wrote quite a few articles over 2009. Made updates and as comments came in. Sorry have not checked since october.

"Windows 7 Setup does its compliance checking before the phase of Setup where you format the disc. (Unlike with Windows Vista.) This means that you can format your existing hard drive, and blow away a previous Windows version, and not worry about activation. If it was there, Windows 7 will still activate."

OK just read this in his site. My mates PCs had Vista. But I'm sure I formated disk before starting. As I had two failed W7 installs before third stuck. But that was becuase he had DVI/VGA cables both connected and I did not notice!

Should not matter.try sevenforums link opt 1 if activation fails follow option 3. Others have posted it worked with new disk.

I followed this guide and it worked perfectly. I only had upgrade disc for a new build.

Option 2 on Thurrott's supersite worked for me.

You can perform a clean install from a Windows 7 upgrade version however you will have to have a valid previous copy of Microsoft Windows XP or Microsoft Windows Vista installed to validate the upgrade and activate the product key. Please note that when migrating from Windows XP to Windows 7 you will not have an "in place upgrade" option. You will however have the option to select "custom" install when prompted. The Windows 7 install process will then copy all of your data in "My Documents" over to a Windows.old folder within Windows 7 itself. All applications and documents stored in other locations will have to be reinstalled / transferred manually.

When migrating from Windows Vista to Windows 7 you will have the option to select "custom" or "upgrade" install when prompted. By selecting the "upgrade" option, your documents and applications will follow and carry over through the install process.
