hi all, ive been trying to get a small network set up for file sharing for a while (not connected to the internet) and have had a lot of problems, especially with the vista and windows 7 machines.

I was using standard netgear hubs and tryed a few, all with the same problems. as an experiment, i plugged in an old belkin router, and they seemed to work!

im wondering why i couldnt get it running properly with just hubs, is it the fact the the hub isnt intellegent and the computers on the network needed to have ip's assigned by the router?

cheers!

I assume you mean a switch and not a hub, doesnt really change anything though.

Basically the easiest way to do it would be assign each machine a static IP.

If you dont they will be assigned an auto private IP whihc will start with 169

im pretty sure i did try that on the machines some time ago.

could there be any other reasons for it not working with just switches?
