Repairing PC/Apple and laptops for a living?

Is there a realistic opportunity of making a reasonable income from repairing laptops and PCs?

I am thinking of starting a home based business and was wondering what the market is like for a business of this sort.

With PCs and laptops being '2 a penny' these days and that we live in a throw away society, would it be more a case of people just ditching a faulty machine and popping down to Tescos for a new one?

I was originally thinking about concentrating on Apple machines as I reckon people are more likely to repair a mac than a PC. But with approved Apple technician courses costing nearly £5k it would be an awful lot of money to invest if there was not an income to be made out of it or if the market is flooded with similar businesses already.

Any thoughts or opinions? :)

Cheers
Dave

Too many folks doing and too many customers wanting the world and being a pain in the arse

specialising a bit re Apples may be a bit better idea but are there enough about and would you be happy visiting the bedrooms of Mac users ;)

Yes there's a market. I'd say there's more of a market sorting people's Windows installations and getting rid of viruses and malware though. People like to pay to get it fixed how it was. Anyone can reinstall but people prefer to get it fixed. You should be able to get most machines back to 99.9% how they were originally.

People may be more likely to repair a Mac, but only because they cost a lot more than the normal Windows only laptop, however there's far fewer of them and those that have them will more than likely have Applecare. So you'll only get the people scared off by Apple's various stepped quotations.

Most people will a: have AppleCare and b: take their Apple kit to an Apple Store. They aren't going to call you.

However if you specialise in Apple OS X Server you could do support for businesses that use Apple Servers (like design agencies for example)
