Quick question. If I get a temporary job for 7 months, by which time I would have earned £8400. How much tax would I have to pay on that?

Cheers

Goto listentotaxman ... That's a good site for working it and a damned site more helpful than suggesting google on a 'discussion forum' ;)

Cheers, I tried that website, but supposing I only work for those 7 months in the whole year, how does that tax work, would it be taxed assuming my yearly salary is £16200 (in which case my net wage would be £13,101.65)? or am I just taxed on the 8400?

You'll only be taxed on what you earn. The first £6475 you earn in a given tax year is tax free, and you'll pay 20% on the remainder. So if that £8400 is all you earn in a given tax year, you'll pay 20% on £1925, which is £395.

As what was said above, although I was sure it was 10% after 6k till about 19k then 20%. until 36k then 40% for everything above.

You will pay tax and NI at the expected rate of earnings for the 12 month period. You are then able to reclaim your additional tax paid at the end of the tax year.

Assuming you have not informed HMRC some how that you will not be working in the rest of the year and they have accepted that.

I seem to recall the 10% being abolished, and the 22% rate being brought down to 20%. This was before I started work, so I didn't pay much attention to it at the time.

Perhaps it might have, I was sure I wasn't getting taxed 20% on the small amount I earned over 6k.
