Question about permissions!

Hi all,

I've just installed Windows 7 onto an old XP machine, and it installed fine (moving the old Windows installation into a folder etc)

The problem is, however, I can't access my old documents!

I got into Documents & Settings, and it told me I couldn't access the named drive. I went into the security tab, and gave the new user (and "everyone") full access.

This seemed to work. I could then access Documents & Settings\User\My Documents

But trying to open, copy or cut any of these files so I can move them into my new My Documents throws up the permission error. And more permission errors when I try to give myself permission!

The new 7 user is an admin level account.

Any ideas?

take ownership of the files, within the permissions under security there will be an advanced button that will contain an ownership tab. assign yourself the owner and all will be fine

Tres,

You not only need to change the permissions but also take ownership of the Documents & Settings files as well as it's subconents.

Should you require additional assistance with this process, Microsoft does have an official Windows 7 Support Forum located here http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/category/w7itpro/ . It is supported by product specialists as well as engineers and support teams.
