So, has anything improved in regards to Xfire for these two cards with all the new drivers?

My basic question is:

Will the 4870 drop its performance down to 4850's levels or will they manage to work to the max of their abilities?

If the 4870 performance is going to drop ill be selling the 4850. If not then where would it sit performance-wise compared to the 5850/5870 generation?

thank you

The performance will drop to 4850 speeds. Crossfire only works according to the lowest denominator.

Like for like you get same speed , so 4870 + 4870 you'll get 4870 speeds, but 4850 + 4870 you'll drop to 4850 speeds.

From the reviews I've seen xfired 4870s just fall shy of 5850 single card in some games. To get near the 5870 you'd need to xfire 4890's.

Hope this helps

Thanks, that is very useful.

Ill keep the 4870 and sell the 4850 then as it makes no sense Xfiring them just to get 2x4850 performance (esp. considering they use a lot of power even idle).

cheers
