Temp concern -i7 920 @3.6ghz on H50 & 4ghz on ultra120

Hi all, so yesterday I ran prime for one hour with my cpu at 3.6ghz under a corsair H50. It's ran stable like this for a while now but I was concerned about 70 degrees average across the cores. Should I worry at that?

Then today I was just playing with my old Thermalright ultra120 to see how it performs against the H50 and upped the cpu to 4ghz, temp was 80 average across the cores. Is this just way to high really? What should I be really aiming for temp wise at 4.0?

Thanks

That's what i thought but I've heard people (maybe scare mongering?) saying that 80 is way too much. The 975 extreme that I use at work hits high 70's on the stock cooler with turbo mode 3.6ghz.

Someone also told me 70 was high for 3.6 on the H50 though.

Does seem high at 3.6ghz, the H50 is reputedly on a par with the ultra 120, of course it will depend on what fan/s used, currently running an i7 at 4ghz under an ultra (lapped) with 2 x 300-1350 rpm fans, max temp with prime was 71c last time i tested it.

Maybe the my fans are the weak spot, 2x enermax twister "cluster" fans max speed 1200rpm with 53CFM pretty much silent but I guess that might not be enough airflow then. Paste wise i'm using mx-3.

The fans im using are rated for 57 cfm, however a cooler like the ultra really benefits from fans with high static pressure due to its fin spacing, i found sharkoon silent eagles to be a great fan on this cooler.

Hey, if you look at my thread on " My first overclock " also in this forum (By me, on my first overclock yesterday), I also have the 920 and a Corsair H50. The temps I got at 3.6 were up to 70, not much hotter.
All the settings I have are in that thread, using my MSI X58M. I plan on trying 3.8Ghz soon.

Hope that helps.

Thanks all, and I'll have a look at that NutterzUK. Cheers.

Just for testing because personally I couldn't put up with the noise but I tried a single Scythe Kaze fan with 110.3 CFM @ 1900 rpm on the ultra120 and saw temps of around 71 degrees @ 4.0ghz.

I shall be re fitting my H50 I think and having a play with fan configurations and voltages.

This is starting to look more like it. 1.24volts at 4ghz and cpu-z showing 1.2v seems stable so far.

Fitted the ultra120 with a noctua and corsair fan which push a fair bit of air and can't be heard over the rest of the system.

Just dropped my cpu temp 7c in OCCT by reducing vcore 2 steps from 1.31. Thought i'd try it as i'm only running at 3.6ghz instead of the 4.0ghz it was prepared for; now im under 70c.

Are you using the 920 cpu as well? Looks like a good drop in temps. Mine was at 1.28 for 4ghz and now at 1.24 with loadline calibration enabled and it seems just as stable.

i920 yes, using a noctua with push/pull.
I might actually try going back to 4ghz with this lower vcore, OC seem to default to quite a high value judging by the numbers here (1.31)

It's not scare mongering!

the max recommended temp for a 920 is 100c

No! Its 78 degrees core temp. Most round up to 80. Do NOT exceed 80 degrees core temp!

If you are using Core Temp, or Real Temp to monitor CPU core temperature, then the maximum temperature you should see is 80 degrees, Actually, Intel quote a max core temp of 78 degrees but most round that up to 80.

Stay below 80 degrees with your overclock to avoid degradation.

At 90 degrees, turbo will automatically switch off.
At 100 degrees the CPU will throttle back.
At above 100 degrees, the CPU will shut down.

100 degrees is way, way way to hot and you are degrading your CPU, and risking throttling.

My CPU voltage at 4GHz with a P6T is 1.24.

Temps are very low with a Noctua NH-D14.
