Last time i went to the doctor(side of my right hand has gone numb), topld them that on the phone.

Walk in doctor seems really confident and starts checking eyes, asking questions and all sorts even weighs me and says yep, you seem fine that'll do for your check up.

...err I'm here because my hand's numb

Oh... lets have a look, well there's no muscle wasting yet so it's not serius, try to change how you sleep.

:/

Great so it's only an issue when my hand starts dying :(

Leprosy! A thousand years ago, you'd have been shipped off to an island to die. Now, you are allowed to reproduce, to the detriment of the human race :(.

You'd be better off seeing an expert like a neurologist.

GP's are the bane of the medical profession.

With or without leprosy that was always going to be the case :p

Has your hand fallen off yet? If not, successful diagnosis!

Hand's still here but it's *****ing annoying, it's like when you've got a dead leg before pins and needles set in can still sort of feel things but they don't feel right.

Can i discuss more than one thing with the doctor or do i have to make seperate appointments?

Yep, I've enquired about 3 things once before, all turned out to be pretty minor but I found it more helpfull than scouring the net for advice.

Also for some things it's best to ask to see another doctor or get a referral if you think your GP isn't doing his best for you, when I had a really bad varicose vein in my leg the doctor dismissed it at 1st without looking and told me it would probably go away , I pressured her to take a look and when I showed her it (the vein that is, snigger) she gasped (;)) and gave me a referral, the end result being a small op to remove the vein and a damaged valve in my groin

My personal experience is that trying to have more than one thing seen to at a time agitates the doctor. You'll get your first thing sorted, but they'll rush through the next thing and not really do a proper job of it.

So...whatever is most urgent...do that first. Just in case.

Well in this case BOTH were of importance , both could end up life threatening

However that's why i booked a double appointment and i'm glad i did

I think it's already been established that this varies from practice to practice.

With ours you have to book a double appointment (10 minutes instead of the usual 5). They do sometimes overrun though, especially with one excellent doctor who doesn't rush you at all. This does mean you normally end up having to wait a while past your appointment time though because he's taken time with other patients.

Numbness in the hand could be from any number of causes, e.g. you go to see a neurologist - he/she thinks it's a musculoskeletal problem and refers you to that specialist - you see the orthopod who thinks it's probably a benign syndrome, not requiring surgery and discharges you

So you've used up two hospital appointments (or more), probably had a few x-rays, maybe conduction studies, MRIs, etc all to the same conclusion (plus even with current waiting times you'd have waited around 3+ months to get to this point - and if you are advocating open access to hospital specialists, prepare to get in line behind the million or so people with a headache waiting to see the neurologist)

I'm not saying the GP is right or wrong, but to assume you know better is pretty ignorant

A GP is incapable of performing tests which can diagnose the problem therefore a specialist referral is indicated.
They can refer you for tests and see you with the results, or they can use the history +/- examination alone, and save the need for further investigations. Plus they can usually go blood tests, etc (and some can do x-rays) which may diagnose the problem

you seem anti-GP, which is an unfair position, as they work in part to screen out a lot of self-limiting or minor conditions which do not require a specialist opinion

if you saw a neurologist for a numb hand the consultation and MRI scans would cost near £1000, but any GP can manage it at far far less cost to the taxpayer...

At least your GP doesn't try to ply you with contraindicated medication like mine does. I was offered quetiapine for SAD, jesus, the barbiturates would be safer than that!

quetiapine is the most horrible medication i've ever been on in my life :(

felt like I'd been lobotomised. :(

To be fair they didn't manage it, they said come back when the muscle in your hand has died :/
