Hi all,

My old ROCK laptop (CTX t2700, Gefore Go 7900 GTX, 2.33 dual core, 4 gig ram) screen just died (well it remains backlit but shows nothing) so a new one might be in order! Ive done some research and seen a few nice deals like these -

Advent 7555 GX £700
Intel Quad-Core Processor Q9000 (2.0GHz, 1066MHz, 6 MB Cache), 4GB DDR2, 320 GB HDD, 17" Screen 1440x900
ATI Radeon HD4850 Graphics (which i read is very powerful)
pros - very fast, great gpu
cons - big screen + heavy

Acer Aspire 5740G Core i3 Laptop £589
Screen size - 15.6 in - 1366 x 768, Processor - Intel Core i3 I3-330M - 2.13 GHz, RAM - 4 GB, Hard Drive - 500 GB,ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650.
cons - GPU not as powerful as the HD4850

Im wanting to spend around £700, but im open to suggestions. The problem is that advent 7555 is a 17" laptop, and im really after a 15" one. My current laptop is 17" and it is just an effort to carry.

Do you lot know of any 15" gaming laptops which carry the HD 4850 GPU or one which is around the same level of performance? i understand the Radeon HD 5650 is very good, but the 4850 is a fair bit better.

Any help welcome, any brand reputation information welcome and any other models you think i might like, please let me know, thanks :)

I have the Acer you refer to above. At the 1366x768 resolution this laptop performs superbly imo, my mate is now buying one after seeing mine in action, I currently play Mass Effect 2 and World of Warcraft. The GPU is not quite as good as the Advent but the screen resolution is slightly less on the Acer.

Played Half Life 2 1080p max details no problems, played Batman Arkham 1080p average 35fps max details and had to knock it down to 720p to play COD World at War but still decent performance…

Look at this thread for plenty of info on the Dell studio 17

Overall decent laptop but has a few issues which I think you should look into. Dell do have discounts kicking around the net, search for them as they do knock the base price down quite a bit…..

As far as I know, out of the bunch above, the 5650 or the 4850 are by far the best graphics cards (not sure which out of the two), and should make the most difference in performance for the laptop, so I'd go for one of those, depending on which laptop you can find with the rest of the specs the best.

Edit - Also it may be worth checking out the dell outlet, I picked up a good laptop off there for £700 a few years back that should have been over £1300 as it has a minor blemish on the screen. But for £600 I can deal with that as it's hardly noticable!

The 5650 in the Dell isn't clocked to the full potential, or so I'm told... Its still quite powerful though..

As for Dell outlet. Good call, however also look on quidco etc... I got mine brand new with all the extras for sub £800. I paid additional to Dell for a rucksack carry case and an external mouse and headset.... Watch Dell and their prices, I nearly got caught out with an external HDD, was £20 cheaper elsewhere, but Logictech products by Dell are about the same prices as most retailers...

Dell carry cases are good, I got a Dell Targus branded rucksack for £45 and its fantastic, lots of room..
