Hello,
I got a hiper 580 watt psu from carboot but have found a thread on OC about them blowing up. This has got me worried, so maybe I buy a new one if I really need to. My current psu is 350 watt and runs my hd4850 nicely. I believe the hd 5870 is just as energy efficent, so do I need to upgrade it?

yes, you do need to upgrade it. 350 is on the limit of what your pc will be drawing at max load.

Get a 500-600W from a decent make, and you'll be fine. Corsair are very good.

Hiper do indeed explode, and often take other components with it, so get rid of that thing.

If you are going up to 5870 then i think you should def be looking for nice new PSU - Antec 650 seems popular.
