What is (if any) the advantage of the extra gig of memory on the 2gb cards ?
Is it just for stupidly high resolutions ?

Benefits for those who run SLI. At the really high resolutions the card is hardly fast enough to warrant having 2 gigs.

If your running at 2.5k+ resolutions. A single GTX 460 would be far too slow to run at the resolutions where 2 Gb becomes required, but an SLI setup would handle it a lot better.

If youre playing at 1920x1200 or less, you wont need 2 Gb at all.
