Spec me a dslr

theres a few cameras that fit into that budget. A few questions though.
1. Have you any preference what camera make you want?
2. Have you been into a high street shop to see how any cameras feel in your hands (last thing you want is an uncomfortable lump in your hands)
3. Do you have any specific things you wish to photograph? (landscapes, portraits, sports, macro)
4. Would you consider second hand to get a better spec'd camera body?

1. I have been told NIKON are a safe pair of hands due to the range of lenses.
2. No, I'm in London today though and having a browse.
3. Nothing specific, so a good all-arounder if possible.
4. I would rather buy new for warranty purposes.
I know it is slightly more than 500, but what about the NIKON 3100 (if released)?
