Need help (explorer.exe issue)

My mate's PC loads a blue background, no explorer or anything loads up.
If he presses Ctrl+Alt+Del and brings Run up from the Task Manager, he could type Firefox and it would load his browser, but when you type explorer.exe it would say it cannot be found.

He is a gamer so only wants his game to load, which is does if you type the path in the run command, but he moved his PC to another room and now cannot connect to the internet wirelessly.

He needs to load up the network connections but I cannot find the run command for it. He is using Windows XP.

Please can someone help?

go into task manager and select new task and type cmd.

Once in the command prompt, type 'sfc /scannow'

Hopefully should repair the issue.

Already tried that mate, goes through with no problems...yet still doesnt work.

Try "C:\windows\system32\ncpa.cpl"

This one works in vista, im not sure about xp, not used it for years.

Have you tried doing a repair install from the XP dvd?

ps. Have you tried booting into safe mode?

I've seen a rather nasty virus that does this, essentially removes/deletes whatever you want to call it the explorer.exe process completely, only fix was a system restore to before it happened (for us anyway)

Try a system restore or a repair installation.
