Main reason i ordered a 6970 is because of 2560x1600 res which i will be playing at soon and also in crossfire they will really shine just like 6850/6870 have.....the scaling has gone incredibly good.(6 series are quite a fair bit better than what 5 series were at scaling.)

I was considering a GTX580 but the price put me off.

Probably in a few months the performance of these will pick up a bit more too due to drivers.

If those benchmarks are correct the 6970 is, roughly speakng, somwhere in a range of either 10% quicker or 10% slower than a GTX570 depending on which game you look at, so pretty even over all in terms of raw performance
I've looked at the comparisons, but being that I have had a new game for years, are the games where it (6970) does less well DX11?

Quick breakdown from russian site:-
570 vs 6970
1920x1200 AA+AF

Aliens vs Predator
12.3% win for 6970
Crysis
17.6% win for 6970
Dirt2
15.7% win for 570GTX
Metro 2033
12.3% win for 6970
Just Cause2
10.5% win for 570GTX

I make that very close run thing 3 for 6970 and 2 for 570GTX
They are neck and neck.
Considering 570GTX is £30 cheaper.
It aint no champ. It looks like a bit of a lemon.

Its not a fair fight against a 580GTX. As the site says "was generally slightly better than the GeForce GTX 570, but considerably weaker than the flagship GTX 580."

Yeah but the 6970/50 in those reviews with TPU like averages would be stunning compared to the last gen, considering at top res the 6950 is 1020% ahead of the 5850 and the 6970 is 1080% faster then the 5870 :p

Thats why I don't look at round ups or averages, because they tell you smeg all :p

In reality I mostly call shens on that review, the 6950 has 10% less SP's(well a little less than that) but also 10% lower clocks, you'd generally expect that to add up to really 18-20% slower than the 6970, but its mostly 10-12% behind and in one outlier a whole 16% behind. I'd suggest neither are running even close to as fast as they should and considering there are still newer drivers that are noticably faster(and I'm not sure, another set also, theres 2 sets of 10.12's and from the looks of it, one for reviewers and the website ones which are basically for every other card in general), well, we'll see.

I think unfortunately a lot of people are getting out of control and besides themselves over AMD doubling performance in uniengine and thinking the new cards are going to be somehow ridiculously fast in games, they might be, wait for a PROPER review from an established site.

I agree. 570 will clearly overclock better, but 6870 uses less power and may see improvements with future drivers. Both are pretty much equal so far.

There is less than 5-10% in each benchmark at 2560x1600; at the prices both cards seem to be available for right now, the 6970 seems the best bet, surely 555BUK? Can't find a 580 for that price anywhere, feel free to let me know!

edit -- either way, a 'slight' increase will be noticed over my 4870x2 I am sure :p

Is the 570 GTX really £40 cheaper - I've done some pretty rigorous searching and I can't see one selling for £240 delivered (i.e. £40 less than I can get a 6970 delivered from here).

As for people claiming to have bought a 580 for £342 I would be most surprised at that

Yes, the 6970 (and GTX 570) are clearly better value than a GTX580. I cannot argue that point.

It *was* £40 cheaper, but no longer.

Hmm really considering one of these but thinking it might be over kill on a 1600x1050 monitor with no chance of an upgrade. Soo tempted to buy a 6950.
