Hi all,

I'm planning to upgrade to this nice little bundle with some of me christmas money. I don't need it right away particularly, and what with Sandy Bridge coming out soon I'm assuming i5 prices are going to drop a little bit. I don't, however, know how much or how soon that'll happen and of course in a few days VAT is going to go up anyway.
So in a nutshell - would you wait a month or two, or would you buy now?

If prices do change, it wont be anything substantial, i5's are still solid cpu's. Also the tax increase will offset some of the price drop as you say - so personally, I don't think it would be worth waiting.

It would however, be worth waiting, if you were going to pick up a Sandy Bridge instead. :)

dont expect price drops on the older tech when newer tech arrives. From my experience it rarely happens in the world of processors. Look at something like the E8400 for example, same price now as 2yrs ago wen it was the 'must have' chip

The E8400 confuses the hell out of me, it costs more to buy today than it did when I bought mine two and a half years ago. It's a PC component, the value is supposed to drop like a rock two years later!

yes & no, if the socket it's on is EOL, over time as chip supplies becomes scarse, prices can & do creep up as people extend the life of there ageing rigs by doing just a cpu upgrade.

VAT rise on an i5 will be about £3, don't worry usual marketing motivator!

So true and it makes me laugh when I hear about how busy shops are and reporters are putting it down to the imminent rise in VAT. I don't know who's more stupid, the journalist or the British public as the rise in VAT will have such a small impact for 99% of our purchases.

It's definitely worth waiting i'd say just because the whole market will shift a little. Just need to wait and see how everything else fits around SB in terms of price/performance.
