Are you going to flash it? It is so simple, it literally takes 1 min! Then 1 min back to stock if you use the batch files from techpowerup. Then you could compare them.;)
lol I doubt I will be able to resist temptation, will see what it's like at stock underload if its loud I won't bother. :)

I was going to get a 570 and was just about to pull the trigger when the news broke out about the bios flash, and at £214 v £300+ at the time, there was only going to be one winner for me.

I also kept my AC cooler from the sold 5870 it was replacing, so it was win win for me.
Those Accelero Xtreme coolers cost about £35 right? in your situation then yeah you can't lose as you haven't had to pay any extra, bonus. I'm guessing its really quiet, even with a 6950/6970?

You are a lucky dude:D, do you get to keep them, hows that work then?

Not all the time, they normally send the sample for a few weeks so I have limited time to bench them. :(

Ok so for fan speeds:

HIS HD6950
At 800/5000MHz: idle = 28% load = 37%
At 865/5500MHz: idle = 28% load = 40%
Unlocked at 8800/5500MHz 1536 Shaders: idle = 29% load = 51%
Idle volts: 1.0V
Load volts: 1.1V
Load volts unlocked: 1.175V

The fan only becomes audible above my case fans at 45% but it doesn't get intrusive till it reaches around 50%

ASUS HD6970
At 880/5500MHz: idle = 28% load = 51%
At 949/5896MHz: idle = 32% load = 57%
Idle volts: 1.0V
Load volts: 1.175V
Load volts when overclocked: 1.24V (voltage tweaked)

The fan only becomes audible above my case fans at 40% and becomes quite intrusive at 52%. It reaches blow dryer levels at over 60%

Inno3D GTX570
At 732/3800MHz: idle = 49% load = 67%
At 901/4200MHz: idle = 49% load = 70%
Idle volts: 0.988V
Load volts: 0.963V
Load volts when overclocked: 1.063V (voltage tweaked)

At 49%, it can barely be heard and even at 67% it is slightly audible but not intrusively so. It becomes more of a soft whirring noise.

ASUS GTX580
At 782/4000MHz: idle = 51% load = 69%
At 903/4220MHz: idle = 57% load = 74%
Idle volts: 1.014V
Load volts: 0.992V
Load volts when overclocked: 1.180V (voltage tweaked)

Again, it's quiet at 51% and only becomes audible at around 60%. At 74%, it gets intrusive.

Just as a note, those were recorded after 5 minutes of running MSI Kombustor and because I use dual screens, all the cards are clocked higher than the default 2D speeds at idle.

Edit: added flashed HD6950-HD6970 results

Well i can tell you that the 580 is extremely quiet and cool when on both idle and load if £400 is indeed what you want to spend on a high end card

I don't agree with that, maybe compared to the GTX480 it's quiet but not the HD5870.

I'm waiting for a 3rd party cooler for this thing, the noise can be annoying.

I thought with the Accelero the fans run at full speed all the time, but they are dead silent anyway.
Not on the stock 5870 or stock/flashed 6950/70. It works on the same principle as the stock fan with the card temperature diodes.

Some times is better than never, plus you are in a fantastic position to sample new technology.

Does the Inno3D GTX 570 idle at 49% even just in windows itself when web browsing etc? reason I say is because mine idles at 40%.

EDIT: Just noticed this, so makes sense:-

Directly to the vga, that's part of the reason it's so good imo, you can lett CCC do all the work for you or make custom profiles in afterburner.
I thought it will work the same way also with Thermalright Shaman which is why I bought it. However it doesn't and the only way how to do it is to buy VGA PWM to normal fan PWM reduction from Honk Kong (ebay) as it seems impossible to get anywhere else and Thermalright doesn't include it !

I'd get the 6950 Frozr. It's a proven quiet cooler (people on here raving about their HD5850 versions) and comes with a free unlock to a 6970.

Plenty of change left over.
