Has anyone explored freetrack? Essentially a cheapy way of getting trackir for a fraction of the price, I think it would add to the immersion with a single screen set up.

IRacing is brilliant.

Anyone touting NFS Shift as a sim needs their head examining.

I've joined on the 3 months for the price of 1 offer but it seems like it's very expensive. Most of the championships it's offering me to play need extra content that it wants to charge me $22 for. The actual sim is excellent though.

If anyone hasn't tried iRacing yet, you can get a month free here:

http://iracing.com/sbrs/

Although, I don't think it's a good idea to give it free for a month, the rookie races will be even more ridiculous than they are now. If you join, make it your #1 priority to get at least to class D.

For me, iRacing is the best of the best overall. Netkar Pro, IMO, has a slightly better feeling tyre model. but the multiplayer experience in iRacing is unbelievable.

Well I had 3 races on the legends oval cup tonight in iRacing.

First race someone span right in front of me in the first corner which damaged my car badly enough that I had to pit. Managed to finish 8 out of 12 in the end but mostly because the others had been wrecked.

Second race went well. Managed to only get 1 incident and that was because someone spun out in front of me and I just clipped them. Managed to finish 5th which I was pretty pleased with.

Third race I was in third place when the car behind me lost control into a corner and side swipped me into a wall. I still came 5th but I was looking forward to my first podium finish. :(

Enjoying it so far though.

Been experimenting with facetracknoir and whilst its good in that you can look to the apex of the corner I'm finding it using up too much CPU time :(

Do a search for Freetrack in this section. Quite a few threads with info in them.

Works well, although I've only tried it in 2d mode ( rotate left / right / up / down ) and costs about £23 to set up, or less if you have a compatable webcam.

Yeah, welcome to rookie racing, not just that but rookie oval racing, not the most fun experience :p

I think (it's been a while...) that I ended up doing a handful of legends races before tt'ing my way up to D class where the Late Model is hugely fun and far far better quality of driving (although obviously the odd silly wreck) :)

On the subject of cost, I just looked in my history to scare myself:

Ouch, $905.73  about £560 in 2 and a bit years (includes 3 years of subs)

Note that they've dropped the prices since I bought most of my content, and I didn't always aim for/get the 10/20% discounts (now as I've got 100% content, minus sprint car, I get 25%)

Oh, and of course that doesn't include the general pc upgrade I did in 2008, the G25, the new cpu/4870/5850 in the last 2 years, plus I recently went triple monitor so 2 more 26" displays...

It's certainly expensive but still worth it imo :)

Lightweight! When Spa came out and I was about to hit the buy button I realised I'd already spent over £750 at iRacing, and that only included one whole year's subscription and several shorter periods. The drip, drip, drip of content is torture for your credit card, especially back in the beginning when things were more expensive, and especailly if you're a bit weak willed, like ovals as well, and got lured into buying a lot of content for the Fun races. :)

The silly thing is that outside iRacing I'm very capable of restraining my spending. I think that was when I finally decided I had to give it up. The quality of the racing in the UK mornings is pretty hit & miss anyway, with few splits outside the Rookie races. So I'm not missing much.

I do miss the forums though. It's such a mad mixture of ultra hardcore sim-freaks as well as normal folk looking for fun that there's always an entertaining clash waiting to happen.

It's also fun watching the iRacing staff trying to keep a lid on the unrealistic expectations of the community (encouraged by unrealistic claims by the iRacing website). Personally I think they should save a lot of money and sack everyone who isn't programming, scanning, or Nim. :)

Still a lot cheaper than actual racing though...

Quick question, how much extra content is required to participate in this season?

It's comments like that which remind me how glad I am to have escaped. Most of the membership -- now and forever -- will never race a real car in their lives other than in their wet dreams, which is just as well based on what I've seen while there. :)

My other favourite comparison is "it's cheaper than golf". Yes, well, it's also cheaper than Berlusconi's lap dancing bill or juggling hand grenades in a china shop, but I'm never going to do any of those either.

Andrew McP

PS the important thing for those considering iRacing to remember is that most of the good, reliable (turnout-wise) racing is down in the lower classes. You do have to spend quite a bit to get a full season in the Skip Barber or the new Mazda series, but it only gets stupidly expensive if you give in to "grass is always greener" sim-racer's disease and go off chasing new and better experiences.

Oh, and the only oval series you really need is the Trucks IMO. The Late Models are ok if you like getting dizzy on silly-small circuits, but the Trucks are fine for scratching the oval itch... as long as you don't mind the occasional 1.5 hour race spending most of it under yellow listening to rednecks bitch at each other. :) You can also jump straight there without buying the Late Model.

PPS To answer your question Pike, it depends which series you're talking about and what you own already. It's a "how long is a piece of string" type question. I think the D series are using a few more duplicates this season though, after requests to cheapen the learning curve. I don't have a copy of the schedule saved to check, but it might only require five or six tracks at about $15 each if you're only interest in road racing. Double that for oval as well. Plus only 8 weeks count so you don't 'need' the tracks for all 12 races in a season.

What he said.

I've just subbed and the experience is unreal. Yes there are a load of terrible racers in the Rookie class. But generally speaking the racing, cars and physics accuracy is like no other experience you will ever come across

I've just gone through the (slightly scary) task of totting up my addiction and it's not so bad.

It's clear to see that most of my purchases are now $0 as a result of reduced annual subscriptions and the $40 rebate each year (annual subs typically cost $99 and you get $40 back by racing a certain number of races each year).

This purchase list represents over 4 years of racing (currently paid up until late 2012), 100% of all the content, plus my account currently has $100 of credit (with $10 added every 3 month period due to the rebate incentives).

It's a staggering prospect at first (especially now due to the quantity of content available) but for where I am at the moment it's relatively cheap. I'll be making new content purchases off my iRacing credits for quite a few months yet (probably years actually!).

Purchase list in full :
