I don't think we'll see anyone getting much beyond 7ghz maybe 8ghz on any silicone based cpu. If it was reasonably attainable we'd be seeing faster and faster clock speeds on retail chips, but what we've been seeing for a good number of years now is just better and better designs with only minor tweaks to the clock speed. I think Pentium 4 topped out what is actually possible in terms of the laws of the universe when it comes to high frequencies and i3/i5/i7 are just starting to catch up to that phyical limit. We might get to a point where new retail chips eek ahead just of where P4 topped out, but it'll be incrimental at best.

For faster CPUs we need better design not more mhz.
