Well,

Between the two of us we have moved to one car as I tend to gt the train to work, we work the same days/times and transport links are pretty good in our neck of North Yorkshire. Over the last 8 months, we've been running around in a Leon cupra on the 02 plate, which has been a hoot to throw around on my Sunday night drive down the country roads. However....

MAJOR spanner. The lift-share that the missus had going has come to an end with two others leaving where she works and the 100 miles a week has become 250, and that is a lot of fuel. So the dreaded decision was made....diesel <hack, cough, spit>

I want reasonable turn of acceleration, much comfort, bigger is better, and good handling. She wants economical, well-spec'd, reliable. There was much debate and a £2k budget made matters more difficult. The option was there, an obvious one, with it's blue, oval badge.

But

That's boring.

And so, for our reliable, oil burner, we chose.......


An Alfa 156 JTDm. 2005 54 plate with the 1.9 150bhp engine, final facelift. Many toys. Much italian leather and a really nice car.

Few issues which lead to a rediculously cheap purchase but some DIY required. It has a PAS pump that was damaged by running low on fluid. It works but is noisy. Simple job of removing the engine sub-frame and out with the alterntor and bob's your uncle. Needs an ARB on the front but apart from a bit of a stone chip damage to the front bumper, she's awesome. 53mpg average, speedo that consistently over-reads by 6mph (how italian!) and no gremlins. Timing belt/water pump 15k back and full history from Alfa/specialists, all for £1900, taxed and tested. Will get some photo's up soon!!!

Nice car, but they ARE a pig to work on even with a ramp!

So much has to come out for even simple jobs, I suggest you download the workshop manual which is available online.

It will save you much brain power trying to work out what to take out when removing certain components!

Would very much suggest flushing the PS system through if the pump had failed, all those nice bits of metal from the pump are now graunching their way up and down the rack. ;)

The fluid change and flush were done by the previous owner who was fairly anal on stuff like that - he even kept the receipts for the fluid.

Had all the comments that I will die a fiery death, surrounded by a broken Alfa but hey, you only live once!

Common misunderstanding. The excitement comes not from the fire-snorting engine, but from the tingle you get from turning the key and seeing if everything still works (or from the electricity leaking from the starter circuits...)

If you want to, just replace the ARB bushes, same kind of procedure, cheaper cost overall, better bushes in the long term.

^ funny you should say that, the 320d was on the list. But for the pennies was as big a risk with less performance and much more bland. A red Alfa looks good. In balance with the yellow AA van. Had to leave the RAC as colours clashed..

I was utterly underwhelmed with the 2.4JTDm I drove. Just felt like... some diesel saloon.

Forgive me if I'm wrong but aren't the bushes and the ARB the same item on these? They come as the same part?

Maybe on yours it is different but I was sure that this was the case?

I also seem to recall that ARB issues are a complete PITA on these and thats why so many are for sale with, you guessed it, ARB issues! :p

Styling-wise and the fact there are as many boggo 3-series running around, I'd rather have something different. I would prefer RW but the car goes over roads that close every year for snow. And the missus struggles with it. A Good enough 3 series would be c.£3k, and I don't want to spend that. The top spec 156, 2nd face-lift, looks better than a rep-spec E46.

The 1.9 is a better power plan. And having tested a 52 plate 3 series, an 04 Mondeo 2.0 TDCi and a Leon Diesel, I have to say, all engines were massively underwhelming, but the Alfa felt the best of the lot.

the 1.9 fiat/general motors 150ps is one of better 4 cylinder diesels, as said its a fair bit more refined then vag and ford offerings

a lot of online reviews suggest they eat turbos and chuck cambelts but them problem isnt as bad as its made out to be
