webcam woes

I have a Logitech Quickcam E3500. I use this primarily to chat via facebook video chat to friends.
It has worked fine, but recently, there has been one or two issues. the other party will not be able to hear anything from my end. however, when I plug in a mic to the front input, the sound will pick up again. I can then remove this and the sound will run fine through the built in mic on the webcam.
secondly, there has been one or two issues with the video freezing...

Now then, the drivers are up to date, and the webcam seems to work fine on the logitech software, leading me to believe that this is an issue with either Facebook, the connection, or my system. The system however is an above average spec, and should perform such a task easily.

I am mostly confused about the sound issue.

any thoughts?

Logically looking at it you say everything is fine with the logitech software so you can say, the camera is fine, your system is fine the connection is fine. That pretty much leaves you with Facebook or possibly the browser. Can you try in something else? IE, Chrome, Firefox whichever you don't use at the moment.
