I'm looking for some software, ideally free which performs simple equipment management and allows a chronological history.

It's specifically not for just computers so having loads of fields for hardware spec/network information isn't really useful.

At the moment we do it manually with an A4 sheet of paper for each tracked item (only certain things are tracked) but i want to extend it so that we have a single resource to look up things like maintenance history and so on.

I know a lot of this is covered in big ERP packages but I don't have the time to dive straight into a massive project like implementing ERP so some pointers would be useful.

Thanks

So you want to make an asset database?

We're using this: http://www.waspbarcode.co.uk/ Along with the PDA/badcode scanner and label printer, sadly we're using the old 5.5 version with a windows mobile 6 PDA.

You can modify all the fields and/or add custom ones too which is useful as we use it as a PAT testing database as well as asset management. Hopefully they have a better PDA solution now though :)

EDIT: to be more specific, we're using this: http://www.waspbarcode.co.uk/asset_management/mobile_asset_wpa1000_wpl305.asp
Label printer isn't the best but does the job, software is brilliant, PDA.....meh

I completed v1 of my db in around 3 hours today.

It provides a simple web-based interface which allows equipment to be created/updated and the have log entries attached. It's very basic and unsophisticated but it will do the job very nicely.
