Yeah that's at home.

I run XenServer 6.0 to virtualise around 10 servers running the following:

- Domain/Directory Services
- SQL Server
- File Servers
- Exchange 2010
- VPN Server
- Web Server

I also run XenDesktop as a VDI service for remote access.

The big HP server is connected to the LTO2 Autoloader for backups.

Is it OK to run that many devices off of the house wiring going into a single room? I would assume that once you start filling up a rack there is quite a load there.

The rack runs of it's own 32A circuit, just to keep separation from the rest of the house. At the moment the whole rack only draws about 1200 Watts running all that. So it doesn't actually cost all that much.

1200w is quite a lot, ~£100 a month or so to run just the rack gear.

This is what I got up to on my "day off" today. New mini cluster of servers. The 1u boxes are R610s with Dual E5645 (Hex Core) and 48GB RAM. The 2U boxes are the new R720XD with 26 SAS drives (24 front and 2 back).

I think I'll get away with direct linking to Facebook's CDN.

Nothing is turned on or even cabled yet.

Edit: I've been itching to post in this thread for ages. This is just the first time I've been able to snap something without any identifying markings or labels.

I want a 12U rack for my CCNA lab =(

Wish I could put it somewhere else, not in my bedroom. The noise when the switches are on!!! The routers are no way near as bad.
Will be walking around Cisco's Reading office labs in two weeks time, wonder what they are like!

Out of interest, what made you go for the R610 over the R810? I'd have assumed that 6 of those would have been less of a management overhead than 12 smaller boxes.

More than I was going to spend but oh well... £185 but then needed to buy a PCI serial card (£15) and a 8 socket surge protector (£18).

R610s give the right level of performance per physical box. Physical segregation is useful if you're building redundancy into a platform. You don't want all your eggs in one basket.

I know you can shop around and get a slightly better deal, and while I'm far from made of cash, what with my partners pending Cancer op, I decided just to get it and save faffing around for weeks trying to save £20.

I'll add another couple of the Routers and a 3550 L3 Switch, which according to Wendel Odom's site http://certskills.com/LabGear/CCNP/BuildLists.aspx (who writes the Cisco CCNA Cert Guide) Gives me pretty much everything I need for a Large CCNP build after I get CCNA out of the way.

I'll post pic when it all arrives.
