I always struggled when cutting weight which is why I'm not going out at the moment... I drink a lot so it's counter productive to training etc really imo.

I'll stay fat then thanks. 10 pints was an exaggeration in case you couldn't tell. I have pints at the weekend as do my mates but they and aren't fat so presumably it can be done.

They're just needing to maintain their current weight though, whereas you need to lose some. Big difference.

Just count your calories and as long as you burn more than you consume, you'll lose weight.

As soon as you stop drinking 10 pints.....next thing you know you'll be shaving your body hair, wearing pink frilly shirts and ordering white wine spritzers you big gay :D

EDIT: Then posting your photo in the "Show us your muscles big boy" thread! :p

Presumably this half marathon could be spread out throughout the week?

Yes, I suppose so, but that doesn't appeal to my sense of humour in the same way.

(I lost 3.5 stone initially through eating and drinking less but after I got going through running as well - booze is the worst, empty, fun, calories. I have recently put some back on (as in half a stone or so back on due to being busy with work and not running quite so much and not watching booze in take so carefully).)

One I get started on the alcohol train it's difficult to stop me, I end up drinking till I black out, so if I want to loose some weight the easiest thing I can suggest is steering clear altogether. But why don't you try drinking vodka and cranberry (or another low cal mixer)?

Lol you noob, I don't drink 10 pints night.

Well you said you're a big drinker and then you said you order ten pints a night so first you try and big yourself up and then you say you're exaggerating.

Which is it?

A 'big drinker' as you describe yourself wouldn't consider ten pints very much.

Hence why I'm confused.

And as for 'noob'. Hardly.

I'm a big drinker, how do I go to the pub on a Friday or Saturday night and order anything other than 10 pints without looking like a bender?

What are your experiences with socialising while trying to lose weight? Can it be done? Is it best to leave my lifestyle alone and find a way to lose weight that fits in with it?

Your first mistake is thinking socialising = drinking

They are two completely different things. If you want to lose weight, cutting down calories is half the battle. So cutting down on drink is a great start.

Get new friends.... If they think you're a bender for trying to lose weight by cutting drink out then they can't be good friends... either that or man up and look like a bender, your health should be more important than your "rep" with these friends.

To be fair,

I don't drink that much - but a night out involves at least 14+ pints, multiple shots/mixers & at least a couple of ciders.

For this reason I don't go out while dieting, I like beer too much & as I drink more I care less about the long term & think only about the short term.

Military is generally very bad for this. I spent 4 months being looked at like a weirdo for not drinking when everyone else was smashing the pints in every night. They eventually got over it, you'd think them being double my age would mean they're a little more mature really.

take out more than you put in.

simple.

drink all you want. as long as you exercise lots you will work off what you drink (i am not advocating becoming a raging alcoholic here)

vodka and soda is a good drink. if you don't like the taste put a bit of cranberry in or slimline tonic.

enjoy life. if your social life as it stands makes you happy then don't change it.

good luck with the weight loss!
