That's poor advice to give. Sure if you're computer savvy, don't frequent dodgy sites or download dodgy files then you probably won't get infected. But how does that help with day 0 exploits or maybe exploits in popular software you use that you cannot use? It's good to have an extra layer of protection and the pros of an av far outweighs the cons.

my AV has stopped 2 attacks in about 5 years.

but i would still never go without one.

I've never had a problem with avast myself. my dad's converted to it too after AVG, Microsoft Security essentials, Norton and Malwarebytes all failed to get rid of a pretty hefty and persistent virus whereas Avast succeeded

I would not be surprised if that process really was a virus disgusing as steam.
I use avast (and steam) for the last 7 years and never had a problem with those.

Never had issues with Avast, never had issues with Steam + Avast...

No issues either, just tried Steam with Avast again no issues, everybody stated you can add Steam to exclude list or turn off Avast for hour or so,it has so many options for gaming which is a plus point.

Or just don't use anti-virus software. I haven't for 2 years and I'm still running fine on the same OS install.

Don't do this. How on earth can you think this a good idea? How do you know you haven't got any viruses without an antivirus program installed? Not all Viruses do anything obvious you know...

And yes, I had this problem too. Added the Steam directory to the exclusions list and repaired the steam install.

Fix:

1. Uninstall Avast, awful anti-virus.
2. Install Microsoft Security Essentials - great anti virus, doesn't give as much protection as others when it comes to idiots using PC's, but so long as you don't go on obvious malware sites, you'll never get any attack or virus on your machine.
3. ???
4. Profit.

Seriously, I really think that a full anti-virus program is just a way of shouting out 'I HAVE WEIRD SEXUAL FETISHES, I NEED PROTECTION FROM NASTY SITES PLZ'.

;)

Complete FUD as usual,I use both Avast on my PC and MSE on my laptop so know what I'm talking about, fact is Avast gives you more options then what MSE does plus Avast has very good detection rate and its not rocket science to use, also the basic version is free as well.

i removed avast as it kept giving weird false positives including not being able to launch certain steam games and not being able to go onto trusted websites after an update, extreme? no as even after the fix it wouldn't work i had no alternative as i couldn't use my computer as intended.

i use spybot search and destroy, malware antibytes, and MSE + firewall, my router is port blocked. I know MSE isnt the best but seriously only run a chunky monkey like avast if your really paranoid or go on torrent / dodgy porn websites

i had it in game / silent mode but its still checked every file that was loading, even when i excluded the game it still read DLL`s and other stuff it made game loading slow and in game i received occasional stutters.. also constant advertising spam.

solution is this. Get a copy of puppy linux, put it on a usb pen, boot in 5 seconds and browse as much as you want, then pull the stick and load windows and play games / listen to music. any files that you DL on puppy virus check first. safe browsing

I use trend house call every now and again to check, online based virus scan :) my point was that if you're getting viruses you're browsing the wrong sites.

My avast recently popped up when launching some new games bought in the steam sales. Nothing I wasn't able to tell its wrong and ignore. Was a little suprising as it had never done anything like that for me before.

I haven't had a single virus in months, with zilch protection.

Seriously useless nowadays, i of course occasionally do checks via a program, just in case but uninstall immediately after.

Plus frankly if someone really wanted in my system, anti-whatever programs wont do jack.

I'm having a problem thats just cropped up that my avast free anitivirus thinks steam is malware and won't let me run it.

Anyone else running avast and having this problem?

Odd.

I don't have Avast but couldn't you just add it to its list of allowed programs (most antivirus's have one) so it never shows up as malware? I'm on McAfee (came included) and initially had problems with Google Chrome until I added it as a 'safe' program...
