Anywhere else? My list is getting bigger, I want to do everything. Well, majority of the best things! :)

Take a drive up into the Dandenong Ranges, stop at a little village called Sassafras and catch a bite at Flippin' Pancakes.

You'll pass through a place called Kalorama on your way to Sassafras. It has a great cafe and offers a terrific view from the hilltop:

Great Ocean Road is doable in a day...as I did it. Self car hire, both of us could drive and we did spend quite a considerable amount of the day in the car stopping at the sights for photos etc - but worth it. It works out a lot cheaper then the bus deal they usually do.

Though that said, I recommend splitting it into 1 or 2 days if you have the time, just to enjoy some of the scenery and relax

PS. St Kilda for night life!

We docked in Melbourne for a day last year. We started off in Little Collins street where the seafarer's mission was, and from there just wandered wide eyed about the place until we ended up in Young & Jack's opposite Flinder's Street station, before having to get the train back to Collins street again so that we could get the mini-bus back to the ship from the seafarer's mission again. Wish I'd known a bit more about the place before we got there so I could make more out of my time there.

Oh well, I'll be going back next year on one our of Ro-ro vessels hopefully, which spend a lot more time in port than the car carrier I was on last year.

So far this is my list:

City:
Melbourne Cricket Ground
Flinders St Station and Federation Square
Trams
Tour at Dads work
St.Kilda (Penguins) and Mornington beach
Docklands
Queen Victoria Market
Melbourne's Waterfront
Eureka Skydeck 88 (If not expensive)
Melbourne Aquarium
Crown Entertainment Complex
Great Ocean Road
Ramsay Street

Animals:
Healsville Sanctuary (Platypus, Barking Owl, Dingo, Koala, Greater Bilby, Red Kangaroo, Tasmanian Devil, Wombat)
Walk around Plenty Gorge Park

Food:
Winery for dinner
Docklands for dinner

Have you been and where would you highly recommend which is a must do! Needs to be in Melbourne, and close to it if possible. :)

Animals, better off going to Melb zoo. Healsville is quite far, as is Warribee. Would see most things at Melb zoo anyway.

Get one of those myki passes (oyster cards) once you get there asap.

Great ocean road deserves at least a road trip with an overnight stay. 3h to the apostles as it is.

Going for Christmas (Cousin lives there - well about an hour out at Ballarat). Got tickets to the Boxing Day test at MCG and want to play Royal Melbourne Golf Club. Didn't realize about the casino - will have to organize a wine tasting for Mrs. A so I can get there :)

Not withstandin la Gillard's bloke bashing in Parliment it is still safe for blokes to walk the streets and surf chicks are still polishin their blokes equipment

Melbourne is my favourite city, was there for 8 months in 2008, absolutely loved it.

You say you are going 'in a few months'? When you are going can be quite critical as there are lots of events going on from Jan-April - The Aussie Open, Grand Prix, Comedy Festival is on for about a month, St Kilda festival is at the start of the year as well iirc. Was pretty easy to get tickets for most things and they were pretty cheap compared to comparable events over here.

Second Chapel Street, some nice cafes round there. I worked just off Lygon Street in Carlton, there are some great cafes, italian restaurants etc round there.

Also don't spend 3 weeks in Melbourne. Bit of a waste? Why not head to Adelaide via the Great Ocean Road? Pop over to Sydney and see the Blue Mountains?

It's a 24 hour flight that is not by any stretch of the imagination cheap - don't waste it by spending 3 weeks in the same city. As great as Melbourne is (Probably one of my favourite cities), there is more to Australia than Melbourne.

I am there to see my Dad. Not seen him for 2 years. :)
We will more than likely go outside of Melbourne, but I would like to do as much as I can in his city.
