The Fremen! Yeah, I remember them. From Wireplay! I know Rikk is on here - although I can't recall his [FRE] nick. There was also [CoG], [TkD], [HooD]....hehe, I remember playing them all. Back in those days I actually had reactions. Now I'm an old man :D

Are you the Wayne who was in Nottingham for a giant booze-up all those years ago?

I remember fondly playing Quake on dialup and then isdn/cable - myself and my friends all mainly played CTF. I remember the ASQ guys (pretty sure the 1st league I played in they won the league that year). USA players coming on as they were LPB's and still had better ping that us on a spiffy Pipex accounts with 33.6k (flashed woohoo) modems ;)

[CoG] didn't really play much CTF in the days I was a part of it - just now and then for laughs. More of a TDM kinda clan. Not sure what happened afterwards - I got sucked into EQ. A good number of the WP Q2 folk moved to EQ and I still keep in touch with some of them. Still have plenty of good memories from those days, but no videos, sadly.

I remember FRE, TKD and of course Hood. I'm sure we had many matches against them. I was an avid player in Revenge [Rv]Hades on Wireplay with Melkior, CJM, Atomic Jam, Vorv, Sid and Q50. I also played in CoC (cult of chaos) fairly briefly and then in rG (revenge of gaia) which was a combination of Rv and CoG CTF teams.

I played through the dial up days from 1997 and then suffered abuse as an LPB when I got IDSN very early on :D

There were two distinct communities back then; those that played on Wireplay through their bespoke game browser and those that played on Barrysworld through a third party app such as ASE (All Seeing Eye).

God I miss those days. So much more fun.

I used to have a video of an extremely early DM match between Rv and another clan (can't remember the name). It was so early no-one knew how to play. It is laughable now. Unfortunately that vid has probably been deleted many years ago but I'll try sifting through some old CD's and old drives.

Haha yeah I remember playing a few German matches and even a Japanese TV league. I was an admin for one of the UK leagues for a short time too. It's all starting to come back to me :)

I MISS MY RAILGUN!!! The Q2 railgun was simply the best ever weapon in any game, ever invented. Ever. Even at close range :)

Anyone else remember that kind of grapple run thing you could do to run faster?

Hades - you mean bunny hopping style where you fire the grapple at the floor a bit in front and then jump and fire to pull you. Let you speed around like a loon :)

Yep that's the one. Running around in DM without a grapple was so frustrating after learning that.

EDIT: Oh another one; hook up to a ledge in just the right way and the momentum could flip you up and over the top of it to get up the top without being seen/shot.

Found this on youtube:

Ahhh, CoG was my home for a long time. I still remember the day we formed....it would almost bring a tear to the eye if I wasn't so old and grumpy :D

I remember Rv too - had a cracking 2v2 in the final at the second Insomnia LAN in 98 maybe... Atomic Jam and for the life of me I can't remember the name of the other lad - young guy, far too good a shot for my liking :D Was me and Mist - we got pannelled on Q2DM8 :D

I even spent a few months in the reformed AbFab with Scooby when I fancied playing on Barrysworld instead of Wireplay. I spent far too much time playing Q2!

As for the grappling hook, wasn't that the lithium mod?

Ah that second player will be Vorvavoo, or Vorv. He always used to play 2v2 with AJ.

I'm pretty sure the first Insomnia was in 1999? - Insomnia 99 it was called. I also recall Rv nearly getting kicked out of one of the Insomnia events for coming back from a night out clubbing and finding a porn channel on the TV in the hall where everyone was sleeping :D
