I play a console for things like battlefield so really it will mostly be used for things like shogun/dayZ (friend of mine has recently got me hooked)

I know it's CPU demanding so would a high clocking intel be better than a high clocking amd?

Just need an idea.

An 85x FM2 socket motherboard, AMD A10-5800K and its included on-chip graphics, you should get medium-high settings on DAYZ is by far your cheapest best cxurrent option.
To beat this with an Intel based setup, you would be looking to start with a separate graphics card better than the HD 7660D which, intel's 4000hd won't be enough.

as iv read on the dayz fourms with dayz it will depend what setings you want to play it at as with it being a mod there is a lot of bugs and a lot of people with high end pc sometimes struggle to play it at high settings

Most lagg in dayz is the server chugging along.

ArmA2 (and shogun actually) are heavily CPU bound. So a high clocked (4-5ghz) intel quad core will serve you best.

i play all the total war series games, and atm waiting for rome2 to come out,

for most of the series in very large battles and high not ultra settings in dx11 it will max out a i5 cpu and drop down to 30/60fps with a good card medium to high spec video card.

you have to play with the settings on a i7 and top end gpu to get it above 60fps in massive battles with everything on ultra in dx11, it's how the game has been written, not the cpu or gpu fault etc, some mods out that will make the games look as nice without loosing anything but speed it up some tbh

darthmod is one of them, but there are many others

i found the i7 better for total war than an i5, but made no difference for most of my other games like farcry, bf3 , skyrim etc

never played dayZ or online either as old and don't like multi stuff, single player only for me :)

That would get you up and going fella. You might need to add a keyboard and mouse obviously, you could use the developers preview of windows 8 for 3 months for free to "try before you buy" an OS. The A10s IGP is an impressive little bit of kit and is gaming capable (youtube it, even the A6 isnt too shabby).

You could add a GPU for more gaming grunt later on if you wanted to, even a 2nd hand 1GB 460 or a 6850 for £50 would be pretty good.

I too have played all the Total war games. My fav by far is Shogun 2 and it's expansions. My HTPC runs it just fine on high settings with an AMD 555BE (dual core @4.1Ghz) paired with a 1GB 460. The real trick is to limit the size of the units, this makes life easier on the CPU but also makes it much easier to manage your army and place them in formation or behind battlements in your castles. If you zoom in close to the units it will impact on the FPS but the idea is to maintain an "eagle eye" view over the battlefield not micro manage.

Look forward to hearing your thoughts and what you settle on eventually :)

also to limit your screen size and res helps the game a lot, less eye candy and smaller sizes makes faster fps, but lowers the feel of the game somewhat, but then again you can't have everything, if you want epic battles then you need a epic pc to play them on.

I wouldn't really recommend dropping the resolution below the monitors native resolution as it has an effect on the quality of the image.

I think I have the unit size set to normal, having large armies might look cool or awesome but I find it detracts from the game. If the unit size is too large they dont fit behind the battlements and you just sustain casualties from artillery/arrows. Seeing as you can have large armies (many units) on the battlefield without upping the unit size I'd suggest leaving the unit size at normal..........each to their own though

If you go for a Trinity setup then get something faster than 1866MMhz RAM, 2133Mhz makes a difference.

Yes would be nice but adds to the cost. The 2133mhz kits were on offer last week but have gone back up in price (he did say cheap as poss). The A10K can be overclocked on the A85 mobo, this can up the RAM speed also. The viper RAM does overclock well (the 2133mhz kits can hit 2400mhz) and the heatspreaders aren't offensively large so I figure for the price it was a good compromise............I won't argue if he spends more on the RAM

Wow thanks guys.the builds look great! Quick question though...
The onboard graphics on that card will be good enough for those games?

Reason I was looking at a dead cheap build is because I downloaded the arma demo on steam to try it out on my brothers laptop.
It's an i3 2.4ghz 8mb ram and 1gb gfx.....and it sucked! I was only playing the tutorial and frame rate was awful.

I ve heard the dayZ mod won't be as demanding as the full arma games but I don't want to pay £25 on steam then download the mod only to find out it still sucks.

Like a post above you could copy a youtuber called jackfrags who built a 'steam box' that will play many of the most demanding games for £300 (excluding monitor), but you can always plug this into your tv. The Video Dayz framerates are shown at 17:30

Comparison between the 2 CPU's - The AMD one seems to be better at gaming, and the intel option is better at most of the other things

Been wondering this for a while myself:
Can 2133MHz RAM work on a motherboard that doesn't say it 'supports' it in the specs ( itonly goes up to 1866MHz)? For example, in RJC's build the board says it doesn't support it yet he's put in 2133MHz RAM? Is it pot luck if it works or not with the board, because I've seen similar specs before and am curious to know the answer :D
