So for those of you who have purchased gold or silver coins, can you recommend trustworthy stores that you have bought from? Online or brick and mortar.

Thanks but i dont think I did :)

Kinda, back to been more of a long term investment at the moment.

Places to buy from;

The Royal Mint prices are not very competitive, but you will get the items you pay for.

http://www.weightoncoin.co.uk/ actually based not far from me, so I order on-line and pick up in person.

http://www.coininvestdirect.com/en/ very keen prices but having to pay by bank transfer and expensive shipping mean you have to check how it costs out.

You don't say where you are in the country, so it's hard to recommend anywhere that may be local to you. So ask around your local (non chain) jewellers as many do stock gold coins, or are more than happy to order them in.

<edit> forgot to add http://www.perthmint.com.au/ postage can be a killer, but it can be cheaper than ordering some of the Australian coins through UK dealers. </edit>

Not a great way to store money (short term) either as at best you will get for purchases is bullion cost +5-20% for gold coins (the larger the coin weight wise the closer you get to bullion market rates) also there is no vat on gold coins. On silver coins you are looking at bullion cost +5-10% +vat on top.
Selling to a dealer will usually get you bullion cost -10-15% for gold coins and as poor as bullion cost -25% for silver coins.
Flip side is if you get something rare you can make bullion cost +50-250% but you really need to know what you are doing to make money dealing in coins.

On the plus side they do make great presents though :)

No Vat on silver if it stays in their vaults. If that is ok or not depends on the size of your tin foil hat ;)

Free shipping on gold too.

If you do order silver then the postman will drop a card off saying you have to go pick it up at the depo and pay the customs charge.

I think that it's important to check out the credentials of wherever it is that you're going to buy from. Especially when it has to do with precious metals in the physical sense. Go down and get them properly valued and make sure there's certifications and all that. If ordering online, search for reviews. You should be able to find SOMEBODY talking about them if the guy is legit. ** No business promotion please **

Most of mine have come from either UK bullion in Sheffield or other random gold shops.. I have various coins ranging from 1 ounz gold to 1/10th silver.

There doesn't seem to be much for sale at the moment though with gold prices being low

I buy it to hedge the risk in my shares.. I figure if the stock market crashes then gold is going to go up again and I can sell it all and buy me some cheap shares ha! Although I do think there nice things.. Especially the 1 ounz coins.

Checking out the above links.. The new Australian mint coins are nice.

So someone signs up today to with the sole intention to bump a two year old thread, and suggests a link. Seems legit.

And it's also purely coincidental that the site they linked to is registered to someone in Newcastle-upon-Tyne too. I wonder, what are the odds of the AC in A.C. Silver also standing for Andrew Campbell?
