There's a house full of students across the road from me, one of them has a white one of these. The most ridiculous student transport ever, but much better than your average Clio Campus!

That made me lol.

OP it looks nice in black, my uncles had Discovery's for years and I never understood the appeal. Then he got a Defender about two years ago and it changed my opinion.

I am liking that very much! Do you take it down your local byways?

I like going out with my mate in his 1954 Austin Champ - such good fun!

P.S. Saw a R33 Skyline which looks like it had been hand painted in black too.

There aren't that many decent byways close to me, so I normally make the trip to Salisbury Plain every few weeks, some fantastic byways and scenery around there :)

I also do Pay 'n' Play days when I get the chance.

Got any vids mate?

How reliable would you say it is (I'm guessing not very)?

The engine itself has actually been very reliable, it's running a 300TDi engine from a Discovery which is widely regarded as one of the best engines you can have in the Defender, but I have replaced various drivetrain components over the time I've owned it. They certainly aren't for people who are scared of a spanner, but they are easy to work on and parts are cheap as chips in the main.

Ha love it!

I drive one pretty much daily, don't know how you live with it as your own transport though. Though you do find yourself attracted to it in a way, they do have a great character about them.

Plus there very handy to have.

The vids reminded me of my brother's Defender 90 which he had back in the early 90s.

We went on a few of those off road days in Wales somewhere but he was using his company Vauxhall Fontera with standard road tyres on it at the time. I recall being fairly impressed with his driving and all the more so after we passed a six wheel LWB Landrover on it's side one day, after a particularly tricky section. Little did I know that these little jaunts would end in him getting a Defender and spending the next three and a half years travelling around Africa in it.

I think the only things he added were a 2 ton winch, standard off road tyres (meant to be good in sand I believe) and a floor safe. He didn't have anything major go wrong in all that time, just a couple of brake pipe splits, the occasional snapped belt and a burnt out the winch one time. That being due to having to pull a couple of suicidal French people and their Peugeot 105 out of a dune in the middle of the Sahara lol.

Some other snippets that he recounted from back then...

* Being thrown into some Moroccan police cell for a couple of days for absolutely no reason at all. Only to find out after being released that the Defender had 300 extra miles put on it by the local police chief. Seems he had to go somewhere and their car was the best vehicle in town that day.

* Driving up to the top of Victoria falls (not via the wet route) and spending new years eve partying up there with a couple of hundred other like minded off road party-goers.

* Attempting to enter The Sudan while under escort by the army only to get shot at by the rebels. They were aiming at the army vehicles but the lead armoured personnel carrier that was escorting them nearly squished him, his GF and the Defender as it sped off to chase away the attackers.

He's got a hundred other stories from that time and remembers the Defender very fondly indeed. Enjoy it.
