Studied Engineering at Cambridge, now live and work in Cambridge. My experience was great - you get out exactly what you put in. The work is hard and there is loads of it, but the sports and the socialising is also great, and it's a beautiful city.

Don't listen to any of the ******** in the media about elitism or anything like that. Cambridge is only elitist in the academic sense, and for good reason. I came from a Northern, comprehensive school background and had a great time.

Avoid the van of death - that will always stay with me...

There's a reason it's called the Van Of Death ;)

indeed, when visiting my friend at st johns we always avoided the van of death. yet to hear any good reports about it.

Nancy students, never had an issue with a market square burger at 2am and neither has anyone else I know :p

Of course though I can understand cambridge students having a dodgy belly after nursing a pint all night taking up decent tables :p

I trained at addenbrookes hospital, so dealt with a lot of cambridge under and post graduate docs... on the whole tended to be alittle bit arrogant and stuck up. However, the city and most of the people there are really nice! (Beers in the pubs next to the river Cam in summer is amazing)

Would you say this depends on which college you attend? I come from a similar background, went to an interview at Jesus College and found it massively over-the-top elitist and snobby.

Where else would a place be rescinded if you are too poor

I imagine most universities whose applicants don't have the necessary financial support. When my wife studies a postgrad degree at Leicester, you had to have a certain figure of disposable income to prove that you could study without need to recourse to a job over the year - I don't think it was as much as Oxford, but Leicester is a bit cheaper than Oxford!

Don't be put off by the nancy-boy image - I do supervisions here and about half of my students (Engineering) are northerners! One chap is a Chinese guy who moved to the UK at about 15 so still has a slight accent, but has a thick Leeds accent over the top of it :D
