its probably a mix between busy and not wanting that type of work.

I mean to do it as you describe you want it doing would probably take a couple of hours, and to make that worth their time they'd probably need to charge i dunno, £25-35/h + bits so you'd be looking at £150, and doubt you'd wanty to pay that.

Much easier to replace laptop screens/remove viruses/sell new builds

I actually think assuming it is modular, and getting the same make is a great time-saving way of fixing the problem

Hit the nail on the head pretty much.
Where I work, repairing PC's just isn't worth the time involved, your earn more per hour working on laptops and macs.

Unfortunately you'll be at the bottom of their job list while they have more lucrative work in.

back in 99-00 I remember the days of soldering variable resistors to the eprox motherboards to give the CPU more juice and obtain 1.6Ghz! yeah baby!

1.6GHz? In 99 we were overclocking Celeron 300As to 450MHz and in 2000 we were struggling to break the 1GHz barrier.

There are 4 computer "specialist" shops where i live in blackpool and they are all utter tripe, they all stock only the oldest tech you can find and have absolutely no idea what words like "crossfire", "modular" and "sandybridge" mean you would have to beat them to death with an SSD before they even got a whiff of what one was and i wouldnt trust these plonkers to change the ball in a mouse because they dont stock lazer mice.
This is why i need ocuk and the guys on this forum and to just suck it up and do whatever it is myself. Have a stab at it, take your time and ask loads of questions on here, pictures help to if you get too stuck.

And OCUK i think its about time you opened a few satelite stores around the UK, starting with Blackpool.

Just gave it a go but got as far as taking the motherboard out but just couldn't remove it without damaging any parts :( sad times. On the plus side I don't seem to have blown it up

There is definitely a market out there for competent stores, the problem is that the profit margins are so small and the overheads so high it's difficult to employ competent staff. I daresay OCUK are just about breaking even from the 'offline' side of the business.
