So I'm looking for a single card at the £250 mark. I'm running on single display 1080p. Might not overclock it massively myself, but like pre-overclocked cards. Also I'm a fan of the Asus & MSI cards because of the coolers.

So looking around there's:

  • MSI AMD R9 280X (Core 1050MHz, Memory 6000MHz) at £249.95 and Asus R9 280x (Core 1070MHz, Memory 6400MHz) at £259.95.
  • Asus AMD 7970 at £257.99.
  • MSI Nvidia GTX 680 (can be flashed to the 'Lightning' LN2 BIOS for faster pre-overclock and enabling more volts for manual) at £259.99.

So with all three of AMD 7970 / AMD R9 280X / Nvidia GTX 680 at the same price, what would you buy?

It's going to come down to the deal and what card you're guaranteeing (top or not).

Assuming you're not going to be overclocking much/overvolting, I would take the 680 out of the equation unless you're guaranteeing a nice top chip; my experience with the 680, you can end up with quite a bad one that barely breaks 1150Mhz without boost.

Matrix platinum 7970 is good. 680 msi power edition was on sale a few days ago at 240 is also very good. and ofc the 280x toxic is probably better than both of them but it will cost more (£260-270).

I duno when the 280x toxic is available, if it's very soon and the price is good, i'd def go with that.
