Was the saving over something half decent even that much? In normal sizes even quality winters are cheap. Paid 60 quid a tyre plus fitting for 15 inch Goodyears.

205/55/16 and£80 a corner fitted at mates rates

Honestly think their decent tyres though especially at this time of year. They certainly are better than the Dunlops that came off or the Michelin energies that came fitted from the factory. You'll be pleased to hear though I have a lovely set of shiny new 17" rims wrapped in Pilot sport 3s ready for spring to come

I have just put a set of the Nokian WR D3 on my Type R for the winter. Went with these against Fox's Conti 850 recommendation PURELY because of the write up in AutoExpress (yes i am that shallow!!)
I do seem to have a good amount of grip in them and first impressions are good!.. Shall see how the winter pans out with them when i need to go to work at 3am!! :rolleyes:

You went with them purely because of Auto Express?!

In the 2012 Auto Express test the Nokian was 4th, the Conti was... 1st.

I always like to fit the best possible tyre and I was disappointed that the TS850 wasn't available in the size I required.

No in the updated test for this year, Nokian have updated the tyre to a new compound and its this that came top (only just mind!) It was in the paper version and doesnt seem to be online????. I got them at a good price so i am happy. I am not saying they ARE the best but good enough for me hopefully!!

Really finding the f1as2 quite poor with the temperature around freezing. Wheelspin from a roll in second really not great. Strange how just a few deg difference and they seem to just switch off. Contisport don't have this trait and neither do AD08 for that matter.

How do AD08s fair in winter generally? As atrocious as one would expect for a track biased tyre or better than you'd think?

I have some AD08Rs to go on the mx5 (on some new 17x8 wheels) but having discovered a very cheap set of oem 16x6.5s I'm pondering a set of winters too.

Rwd, 1100 odd kg of car and 8 inch wide track biased tyres is not gonna be much use if we get a really harsh winter...I almost got stuck a couple of times last year when we had snow and that was in a fwd civic, the mx5 will need all the help it gets.

So I need 4 tyres for a Mini Cooper S.

The Conti Sport Contact 5's are around £510 delivered for 205/45/17
Or should I consider the Goodyear Eagle F1 ASY 2 at £460?

I did think about going for 215/40/17's but there doesn't seem to be much difference in choice or price...

I can't decide whether or not to swap my wheels over for my track day in December (7th) at Oulton park.

I've got the stock Potenza RE050A tyres all round at the moment.

I could swap over to my AD08s, but I'm worried death might occur..

Why would there be? AD08 are better than any Potenza in any condition. Hugely better in wet.

what's the tread depth?

They're not supposed to be used in Freezing or near Freezing temps according to the Yokohama website!

Pfft, I wouldn't read too much into that, as said I found them more useful than f1as2 in freezing conditions. No summer tyre should be used in these conditions really, doesn't mean they don't work.
