For £150 the only decent upgrade would be to buy a second 7850 and run it in crossfire.

There has been a bit of rebranding recently on the AMD side, so the HD 7850 is now called the R7 265 (with new BIOS and coolers) and the HD 7870 is now effectively the R9 270X. The R9 270 is basically a HD 7870 running at 900MHz (instead of 1000MHz). Similarly the HD 7950 is now the R9 280 and the HD 7970 is the R9 280X.

IMHO if you want a meaningful upgrade from a HD 7850 then you will need to spend around £300 on an R9 290 with a decent custom cooler.

You can get a new HD 7850 for £90 at another good retailer. If you sold it and put £200 down you could get a R9 290 but crossfired HD 7850 hits a R9 280x if you get scaling 100%.

Make sure you have a 2GB card and the one for £90 is a 2GB aswell btw.

cheers guys. i did wonder. i may try and find another gigabyte card to match and have a go with crossfire. the rig is packed up so hoping she's out of storage quickly as i have a new cpu cooler and some new case fans for it as well as some SSD back up drives for games to really zip it up.

from memory you dont have to have the same brand card just the same model, and with amd i thought even that had leeway? one of the pro's will inform us soon i hope and we will both learn something

Cards can be complete different brands providing they're the same chip :)

This chart kinda explains what can and can't be crossfired!
