It does seem to be a wonderful box - I read somewhere the other day that a 118i auto is a circa 7 second 0-60 car now. Pretty bloody impressive if so, especially given the box will be able to do it most every time

I think Fox has used the term outstanding in context here, its a large 3.0 diesel. Historically a 3.0 diesel in a 5m long car would be pretty mundane (think old W220 S-Class 320cdi, that thing takes nearly double digits to hit 60). In context the F10 530d is fairly outstanding.

I never drove the 535d. But I did own a mapped 335d before getting my F11 530d.

Do I miss the extra power I had in my 335d? Occasionally yes. But I am happy with my choice. As Fox said, it is an astounding package. So yes, I am very happy with my choice.

The engine, coupled with the gearbox consistently surprise me just how good the combination is. My 335d didn't have that box, and it is a revelation. The 530d almost feels as fast as my 335d did when standard. And that has to be down to the gearbox.

The 30d engine is obviously a compromise option. But it is a worthwhile compromise. It will cost a little less, and will be a little slower, true. But, day to day driving, it will hardly be noticeable. But day to day driving, you will get better fuel economy. Albeit marginally. But that is, presumably, one of the reasons your looking at a diesel instead of an M.

My 530d has just turned 10k, and is settling down to over 40 mpg tank averages. For a car as big and quick as this, that really is astounding. My 335d was only a couple mpg worse mind you, but the 5 is a bigger, heavier car.

Of course, if you are really wanting the power, then go for the Alpina. A 350 BHP 535d. Although admittedly, I am not really a fan of Alpina styling. I would love an Alpina tune on my car.

0-60 in 6 seconds has to be quicker than 90% of the cars on the road anyway, how much more power do you want for a daily driver?

For context the book 0-60 time of a Focus RS is 5.7 seconds, and that has all the luxury and class of a wet carboard box.

The 3.0D in the XJ with 275bhp must be phenomenal then :D

They must be fairly limp horses as it appears to be no quicker than a 530d from 0-100kmph (Annoying BMW don't measure 0-60). Which gearbox does it use? Infact actually it looks slower than a 258bhp 2011 530d.

Although aluminium its still a bit heavier as its a bigger car... What with it being an F segment car.

More questions gents.

The F10 - does anyone have experience getting a pram in and out of the boot? If the pram is in the boot is there much room left?

Cheers

That's why I got an F11, lol.

I found that my pram (Stokke Xplory), that it pretty much took up the whole boot floor in my e91. Leaving little room for anything else (shopping for example). Now I have the F11, the pram only takes up half the boot floor. And I can stick it in the boot lengthways rather then across the boot as I was stuck with in the E91.

I'm not sure I would get an F10 if I was using it for family duties. The F11 is a great looking machine anyway, and more family friendly. Although I'm quite sure the boot in the F10 is cavernous.

Its a larger car no? The XF is the equivalent class car I thought.

Perhaps not for you, but I find it very satisfying. It is much quicker than the 530i despite a slightly lower power to weight ratio. Much of it is the transmission.

0-60 in 6 seconds is perfectly acceptable for a car of this size.
Probably the extra diesel torque you experience over the power?

What are you talking about ? Its a near as damn it a 1.8 tonne car that accelerates as fast as an average hot hatch. No, its not earth shattering performance but there is no arguement that its quite reasonable for the engine size and size of car

Well, I still haven't put the order in yet - I've been considering a 530D instead.

Does anyone have experience of driving both the F10 530D and the 535D?

I have driven a 535D and a 530D, it is quicker but not that noticeable until past 80 ish. I would imagine if you spent a lot of time on the autobahn accelerating between 100-155mph it would be a good bit quicker than the 530D.

In the UK at least I don't think the power upgrade is worth the extra 4.5k over the 530D on a new model. I would be happy with the performance of the 530D but on the second hand market I would pick up a 535D over a 530D if it had the same spec and within 1-2k.
