so my 4890 died so stuck a spare 7800gtx in for now but the rest is not exactly new tech - Q6600, 4gb ddr2, an old 250gb hdd, 23" dell and win 7 ultimate ;)

gonna order a new set up, budget about £1300 all in. Been out of the loop for ages so clueless as to what is best bang per buck between amd/intel or ATI/nvidia

needs - as a single dad with 3 teens at home this is for my use only, my old (the one I am typing on now) will be kept for them in the spare room as my daughters sims 3 etc is on it lol.

looking to run GNS3 & VMware (a few servers/clients) with possible other stuff for good measure, I work in bband/telecoms so constantly learning new tech etc and currently undergoing IPV6 stuff and trialling hubs etc for work hence the need for VM's etc. Will also be gaming so all the latest and greatest. Moved to XB1 for a while but hate pad for shooters so got rid.

will need monitor, speakers, kb and mouse and o/s (not sure if stick with 7 or 8.1). My Sky HD multiroom would ideally be running via the monitor also so multiple hdmi and poss sound (unless via pc is an option)

thanks in advance

cheers stulid

I did think i7 was the way forward anyway after a smidge of research. How does 8.1 stack up as only ever used 8 on a work laptop and hated it!
(I see powershell makes a diff anyway)

Win8.1 with the latest service pack I think is great, you dont have to use that horrid tile interface and it now boots in to the normal desktop style with shortcuts a bit like Win7.

You can also get a trial/preview version of Win10 from Microsoft and this again has a normal type of desktop interface and even brings much of the normal start button features back.
