The Aerohive APs can be configured through a terminal when the HMOL expires, and don't 'self-destruct' - obviously you lose all the features that cloud management provides. The license has a list price of £70 for 3 years, it's hardly going to break the bank.

Edit: To put it another way, the HMOL is often cheaper than the maintenance costs of other Wi-Fi setups (Cisco WAPs and a controller for example). It's unfair to pretend that Aerohive and Meraki APs have ongoing costs that other products don't. If the alternatives on your shortlist have no concept of paid maintenance then you probably don't need these higher-end products in the first place.
