970 SLI or 980 1440p 96hz

I am looking to upgrade my 680 GTX and cannot decide whether to go x1 980 or x2 970 in SLI.
I game at 1440p and monitor runs at 96hz. For around £50 more I can go SLI 970, but how much faster would that be than a single overclocked 980?
Whatever I do, the cards will be under water so heat/power is not an issue.

A single 980 overclocked will be more than enough @1440p but if you can go 970 SLI for an extra £50 then i would personally do that

You will get a nice boost in frames compared to a 980

Thanks for the link it does seem like a decent boost when going SLI, just hoping that if I do put them under water a custom bios is released to give a little voltage.

The 970's will overclock to within an inch of a stock 980 too so for the extra £50 you'll have nearly 2 x 980's performance!!!!

Yep thats my thinking, seems stupid not to. What models would you recommend, considering I will be adding waterblocks and overclocking.

The boxy black reference cards use identical PCBs to the 670 so the blocks are compatible. Checking coolingconfigurator.com to confirm any other possibilities.

I myself have gone for a single 980, as I'm moving from 680 sli mostly due to hassle with an sli setup, prefer single card.
