I plan on buying a 1440p screen in the new year which would require a graphics upgrade as well and my plan was to get an AMD 300 series card since the monitor will most likely have Freesync.

Since the 300 series cards might be some way off and i'd like to play GTA V on high settings I thought getting a 2nd 280x might be a reasonable stop-gap. Will that be enough power for graphically demanding games at 1440p? Also, my PSU is only a Lepa B750W and im concerned that two overclocked 280x's might be too much for it?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Hi,
Resolution has nothing to do with power draw really.

Radeon R9-280X - 30A and a 550W psu minimum for single GPU.Single 280X uses around 240-260W on full stress, I would say that you shouldn't have any problems, therefore 750W seems to be very minimum for xfire of this card.

In regards to the resolution i was wanting to know if 280x Xfire is enough GPU power, my question about PSU was in relation to GPU's, not resolution :)

Yup, had that setup for a month of so. Perfectly fine :)
Even had the CPU OC to 4.5Ghz and the 280x at 1100/1600.

Is that Xfire or single GPU?

Yeah, that should be fine.

If you're interested I'm sure the second hand market is swimming with them. :)

Yeah, i've seen a few for £120 or so in the MM. I'll wait until i get a new monitor and hopefully by that point we'll know more about AMD's next gpu release.

Yeah what worries me is that my PSU isn't exactly a premium brand. I'll just go for it and buy a new PSU if i need to.

Yeah I'd probably want a good PSU.

My old trifire rig, 7990+7970, with an i7 4790k, used ~880W under full load.

Now, you have 2 GPUs not 3 but the 7990 uses less than two 7970/280xs.

I'd say you would be using 700W or so, so a poor PSU that won't actually put that much out could struggle.

How much vram is on the 280x?

At 1440, I've found with new games VRAM usage seems to be increasing pretty sharply and you really need 3gb+ to cope with modern games at 1440.
