Don't forget there are a plethora of 520d's keeping the price of the '5' policy down. All of the 7s are 6, 8 or 12 cylinders with much greater levels of standard equipment. If you think a 330d cylinder head is expensive, try fixing the V12 in the 760..

I take your point with the V12 and V8 engines in the 7 series for sure. However, the 730d engine is pretty much the same as in the 530 as far as I can make out, a six pot that's fitted to loads of 5's and X's. I can't think of a technical or engineering reason why the warranty is so much more for the 7. Me thinks it's a BMW marketing reason and retaining the exclusivity of the 7 series by pricing the upkeep of a 7 out of the reach of mere mortals like me. The car is very affordable to buy even as a BMW approved used such is the fearsome depreciation in the first two years....

I have a warranty on my car because it's a current model 5 Series full of complex kit purchased from a main dealer.

I don't have a warranty on my E39 530i because it's a much older car where you'd be very unlucky to be spending £1k+ a year on bills that would have been covered by a warranty.

An E46 325i is sufficiently old that a decent warranty is almost impossible to get and the ceiling on bills is quite low. You can have a new engine fitted for £1k tops.

There's a voice that keeps on calling me.
As I just mentioned on the BMW thread an extended warranty pretty much mandatory as far as I am concerned. I know someone who had to fork out £3500 when the cylinder head blew on their 330d..... Ouch.

I can't understand why the 7 warranty costs so much more than the 5. These cars are all modular with common parts. Why on earth should the 7 be double that of the 5! I am being rhetorical, brand preservation is what i would think; BMW d not want the 7 to be a car for the masses so hike the prices accordingly! It's a shame - there are some superb three year old, low mileage 730d's out there richly specced for similar money as a 5.

3500 for a head replacement???? Hope they used some lube there :p

It's been said a ton of times but an extended warranty is simply a game of casino where the bet is that you won't have to claim but you're covered for some potentially very expensive repair bills if you do.... Whether or not you buy said warranty is down to your acceptance of the risk. There is no right or wrong answer or approach. My beef is the astronomical cost of the 7 series warranty...

I value it for the peace of mind. The cars are so complex and potentially expensive to repair that for me having the warranty is worth it simply so I don't need to:

a) Wonder whether that funny noise is about to relieve me of 3 grand
b) Fight with a plethora of mechanics about what might be wrong and how much it'll cost and oh it didnt fix it but we put a new widgit in that'll be £500 and it's still broken.
