That looks terrible. I have friends around Perth, and its not a situation I would ever like to face.
Can you even get house insurance there for this sort of event?

Interested to know as it's totally natural.

Guess it would be like our "flood" insurances

Although this is a huge one, bushfires in Australia are a commom occurance but are tackled by specialists teams and helicopters dumping water to stop them becoming big, but this scale seems quite large

Hope everyone is ok

Click here for stunning images of the bushfire and the damage it's caused.

A sample:

^^ Hard to tell, but that's actually a road between the trees. The fire has jumped it easily. Didn't even slow down.

^^ To get an idea of scale in that last one, look for the cars (lower left corner). The green blobs are trees. What you see here is just a small section of the fire front. Yes, it's bloody massive.

Returned to Adelaide from the Riverland today and the smoke was stretching right across the city, almost an apocalyptic scene. The last 2 days have been hot, but at least it's cooled down to a bearable 35 degrees today. Now live in a beachside suburb but used to live in the fire danger area and that is a terrifying fire.

The fire is 12km from us, but there is smoke right across our suburb today. Could smell it as soon as we woke up this morning.

Riverland sounds like a great place to be right now! Pack the kids up, take a trip to Waikerie or Glenlock and sit tight for a few days.

I'm in Hallett Cove, so safe enough here. Stayed with friends near Barmera in the Riverland for the last couple of days and it was hitting 49 degrees under the veranda, so spent the time either in the lake or hiding indoors. Everyone up there was very concerned about the fire and glued to the TV for updates.

Response from people in the northern suburbs has been amazing. I know Playford is a bit of a dump and the local suburbs are scummy, but there's an awful lot of people around here who don't have much themselves yet still found the time and initiative to donate whatever they could spare.

I've been stunned by the generosity. Dropoff points are now saying they're overwhelmed with donations and can't take any more.

Yeah, we're comfortably inside the safe zone. Even if the fire did make it down here, the motorway acts as a huge firebreak between ourselves and the suburb next door. But the wind has changed and is now taking the fire in a different direction anyway.

Still a ton of smoke around here though. Quite incredible.

Glad you and your family are safe Evangelion. It's quite bad from what I hear from my friend a lot of his work friends live that way and just don't know what they are going to go back to.

A buddy of mine who is part of VIC CFS has been sent over to help, we had 40+c here yesterday and 37+c the day before but luckily the fires didn't get to that stage.

Take care out there and best of luck, luckily I live closer to the CBD and the sea.
