I haven't upgraded my pc in god knows how long & have no idea anymore what is advised CPU/Graphics/RAM/anythingwise any more. Glancing at my current setup I have P4 3.00GHz (2 CPUs), 2 gigs of ram (not sure what speed) and a Radeon X800GT gfx card. I have a number of Hdd's but all are SATA not ssd.

I last used my pc for gaming a long long time ago and it has mostly since been used just for web browsing & work but opening Excel and Office are painfully slow, i gave up on video editing a while back and I would like to start playing the odd game on it now & then.

I have no idea what to get however or if it is worth getting a pre built one from ocuk or getting the parts & building it myself (having not done so in many many years). Ironically I am not particularly bothered about overclocking & don't want the faff of watercooling (although a machine running quieter than the current one would be nice). I would like to future proof it ideally and would be buying it through my ltd company as I will be using it for work so can spend upwards of a grand fairly happily or a bit more. I have mostly been browsing the Titan Builds on ocuk to get an idea but thought I would post here for some more specifics if you guys can help.

I know the above is a bit vague but in short, ideas/specs/prebuild link (along with any suggested modifications) for a new rig that will be silly quick for normal browsing/office work & have more than a decent bit of poke for a bit of gaming.

Hi,

Do you have any idea at all what you'd want to spend? I think building is cheaper and you can get more from your money, so it's well worth building yourself.

Hi, it is buried within the wall of text but the budget is somewhere in the area of a grand or a bit more if it is worth it.

I do have a fairly decent case but I am not sure how big the cards are these days so not 100% sure if it will fit things & seem to recall getting a good PSU but this was all some time ago so if building I suspect other than the dvdwr & hdds (as secondary drives) the rest is potentially best replaced. Before buying though I will probably try & confirm the PSU & Case though ;)

Similarly buried within the wall of text :D but they are SATA drives, 3TB & a 650GB i think, may have a really old ide one in there as well.

The PSU is an OCZ600mxsp

The case I am not sure how to identify it other than having just opened it it is very dusty :p, I won it at a Q3 tourney over 10 years ago so no receipt. Here are a couple of pics if it helps:

Yeah you need a new case.

Any IDE drives will need to be binned.

That all looks pretty good :D But some questions.

Is there any particular need for Windows 8.1? I currently have Windows 7 Home Premium at the moment which has both the 32 & 64bit versions.

Would probably be useful to have a bit of extra capacity on the SSD as well, I assume changing that for the 512GB version is reasonable enough? Is partitioning SSD's advised?

When do the this week only offers expire?

Cheers this has been particularly helpful :)

If you have Win7 64BIT then use it.

Yes just up the SSD to the 512Gb version or the Crucial MX100 512GB, no need to partition the SSD, just get the OS on it and the games and programs you use.

Use the HDDs as storage.

Disable disk defrag on the SSD (uncheck the box that schedules it) and I also think in the past people said when you run the windows experience test it might do this for you anyway.

The weekly deals change Wednesday roughly at midday.

Cheers stulid, I very much appreciate this.

Looking at the specs the MX100 looks like it reads & writes a bit quicker so I assume that is the better one to go for?

Just wanted to say cheers for the advice. All built now after a delay in delivery, cannot believe how quiet it is & performance is night & day compared to the old box. :)
