Hey,

Friend is desperate for a 350z (budget won't stretch to a 370z).

What are the things that he should definitely make sure it has before going to view?

Anything to avoid?

Whats the budget?

HR if he can afford it and GT pack is a must IMO. Rays alloys are a good option and avoid the 2006 rev up engines, some of them burn oil. Otherwise look out for clicky subframe, CD skipping and window motors not working well. Fully service history etc.

Budget is around £6.5k so it doesn't look like a HR will be possible judging from Autotrader.

Lol so when you say wont stretch to 370 you mean nowhere near ;)

Ok, in which case I would stick with DE engine GT pack and buy on condition and service history. So long as they've been looked after the cars are strong and reliable. I would always ask what fuel its been run on, if they tell you 95 I would walk away right there, issues with piston failure are well documented on standard fuel. Clutch life seems variable so something to keep in mind. Not much else to say I don't think other than what I said before.

The DE is a good engine though a bit more robust and torquier than the HR.

Here's what my DE made:

At Santa Pod my friend's DE who has less power than mine beat a HR - so don't be too worried! There's hardly anything in it between a DE and an HR, and I personally prefer the drive of the DE, but I prefer the look and interior of the HR it looks more modern and has dual xenons and better mod cons. However, make sure you get a good DE a good one will keep going. However they are not all built equal, and some have not been maintained.

The zed will continue to run if it's been looked after, if it hasn't, things start to get expensive quickly on these cars. Parts and consumables aren't cheap either.

You will get Zeditis though so be warned, it is highly contagious and there is no known cure.

Things to look out for:

Clicking rear axle.
Knocking from the suspension and vague steering feel could be worn bushes
Droplinks can and do fail and also causes a knocking sound.
Engine should NOT consume oil
Rays alloys do suffer from bubbling and corrosion - fairly cheap to get them powder coated - they are fairly desirable so don't get rid!
Hard to check, but if it has been run on 95RON it can potentially (and likely) damage the engine if driven hard
The interior is pretty prone to wear and tear - not much you can do about it other than getting it refreshed. You can get it plastidipped - but you have to rub it down and get it prepped first.
The clutch pedal can "stick" when warm/hot or driving around town, that's a known issue - a slave cylinder, new fluid and I'd recommend a braided clutch line can fix this.
It is fairly common for 2nd gear to be ‘notchy’ when cold and should disappear when the car is up to temperature.
It has very thin pain so suffers scratches and chipping very easily (I know oh so well :().
