HI Guys,

I'm looking to start moving away from getting meat from Asda / Tesco etc and looking for good cuts to start smoking over the summer.

Has anyone got any good experience with butchers around the City? I've got a one local to me here but I do not rate the quality at all.

Thanks

How far are you willing or able to travel? Or does it have to be city centre?

The other half has a car so we'd be willing to travel out providing its not hours :p

Lol. Well there's a fantastic butcher in Rothbury but otherwise you could head to new Hartley. There's a great one there next door to laidler's.

There's also one on Gosforth high street that can be pretty good. I think it's called Charlottes

East Bolton or East Boldon?

Can't find Bolton but very close to East Boldon. Might check it out, I'm also sick of supermarket meat.

Theres a few really good local(ish) farm shops that's worth visiting and not just for the meat, some stock some other great stuff like bread & veg but also have great cafe's as well.

Couple more I've not been too yet

And http://www.brocksbushes.co.uk/ isn't a butchers but has some nice stuff.

Also don't forget about the farmers markets at Newcastle and Hexham

Between that lot you should be able to find all of the good quality meat and food you can eat.

I've been to New Close Farm shop mentioned above a few times - very good meat as well as fruit & veg. I'll have to try some of the others listed - cheers russellcram :)

A couple of places I tend to go to when I'm through in Newcastle. The butcher in Fenwick's food hall is usually pretty good. Also, the Scotch Corner butcher in Grainger Market is pretty decent too.

When I stayed in Jesmond, I used to go to a place on Gosforth High Street but it wasn't the place Dis86 mentioned. I think it was Gilbert Donalds in the shopping centre. Used to get good Aberdeenshire Angus steaks from there (about 5-6 years ago - not sure what it's like now).

I go to New Hartley. Prime Cut it's called http://primecutbutchers.co.uk/

Always really happy with their meats, and usually have some good deals on too.
